F-100 Pilot Call Signs

My Dad was F-100 pilot, including a stint in Vietnam. I was asked by my cousin as to what his call sign was. I think she just finished watching the latest Top Gun movie.
I believe AF didn’t have permanent or semi-permanent pilot call signs during Vietnam war. Am I correct?

Call signs like the modern day really started after Top Gun as far as I have heard. Guys I met from before then would have nicknames but often not as made up as these days. Lots of “TJ” and names like that.

I think what would be more interesting than a call sign would be if your dad flew with the MISTY F-100s. Pretty neat group of pilots with some interesting members.
