I'm looking into getting an externally mounted GPS antenna for my portable ADSB receiver.

Do these have to be permanently mounted or are there ones I can just slap on when I rent (magnetic, for example)?

Just put it on the glareshield. Use some double-sided foam tape, or something heavy and pliable (like the "sand bags" they use to keep a GPS on the dashboard of a car).

Glare shield is a good idea. Maybe I can find some kind of clip-mount, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting tape on a rental plane.

Maybe suction cups to attached to the windscreen. The ones I've tried have a tendency to fall off, but up front it'll just fall forward. When I've flown a rental with one I usually just leave the thing on the back seat and it seems to be fine. With passengers that might not work as well. Some rentals may have bluetooth out ADSB from the plane's GPS now?

My puck is magnetic. My aircraft has a steel tube frame, so I put it on the diagonal tube above my head, where it has an excellent view through the greenhouse roof. I secure it with a zip tie or Velcro strap.

But aluminum aircraft aren't going to have as many options for placement. Plus the glare shield usually has the best view of the sky, and technically you don't want a magnet near your compass.

I'd probably just put it on the glare shield and use a small dot of Velcro or some of that 3M quick release mounting tape to keep it from sliding. If you rent the same plane a lot, put the Velcro dot in an inconspicuous spot and they'll probably never notice.
