Excellent News!!

Well, no.

The good news is, it wasn't a car.

The bad news is, y'all might as well stop with the well wishes on here. Nick got suspended from the board yesterday  and has asked for his account to be deleted. :(
First, if someone's been suspended from posting, they can still read the posts, so keep on with the well wishes and congratulations on a speedy recovery!

And I certainly hope that the suspension is lifted because if the facts are as presented in this thread I do not think that there was a threat stated or implied. However, the MC doesn't do these things capriciously and they don't generally discuss them in public, so we may not be privy to the entire circumstances.

In any case, I wholeheartedly want Nick back and active ASAP!

I'm glad to hear that Nick is making progress and healing.

About that other thing...I think that it is inappropriate and unacceptable for anyone here, no matter how long they have been here or how long we have known them, to call someone else a "snobbish elistist prick". I certainly wouldn't want to recommend that someone else come here, especially a young person, male or female if that is considered as being acceptable here.

I received an e-mail from Nick. Without divulging the contents of the e-mail, there is a chance, a chance, he may return post suspension.

Ummm.... On one hand I agree with the sentiment - don't call people names.

On the other hand, when someone says something that you find offensive/stupid/infuriating... How do you respond and correctly convey your deeply held conviction that that person would look best stuffed and mounted on your wall? Seriously, anger does have a useful purpose, and expressing that anger also has a useful purpose.

Name-calling does not make anything better.

That doesn't address my question - If I say something horrific about your sister/mother/spouse - what do you say to me to let me know that you are deeply offended, angry, and there will be consequences (to our relationship, or possibly my health) if I don't alter my behavior? And how do you communicate it so I know you really mean it?

I have the same issue raising a child - I have to ensure she knows what is and is not acceptable. Sometimes I can accomplish that with just a look, sometimes I have to shout, and occasionally I have to spank.

Online, we only have one channel of communication, so we need to have ways to be clear, and express the full range of our thoughts and feelings.

Privately.
And, whenever possible, with the first assumption being a misunderstanding.

Yeah, but there are the points in every adolesents lives where an adult speaks to them as an adult and says something to them that opens their eyes, and these are the things that mold the adults that the children will become. He called a spade a spade IMO. He was not cruel or obnoxious about it, he was not threatening, but he was very clear and not to be misunderstood. Considering the circumstances, man, "he said it before I did" is all I can say....

Yeah, I concur. I was going off memory of what had been written when I interpreted it as threatening. It was definitely a general statement, not directed at anyone. More a stern chiding than anything else.

Well, we'll see what happens. I hope Nick reconsiders (Nick, you reading this?) because he is family here.

Absolutely.

If this "family" here feels that it is acceptable to call each other names like "prick" in public then I really want no part of it.

Make your thoughts, feelings and opinions know by primate message. There's nothing wrong with that. If the other person doesn't like what you said, that's their problem; not yours.

I chuckle to even think of you, Diana, even writing, much less saying, such a word! :hairraise:

In any event, there are ways to communicate a strong thought without using such harsh rhetoric, and not everyone realizes just how charitable and giving Nick can be (and usually is).

Come to think of it, if one wishes to see insults aplenty, one need only observe periodic interchanges between two prominent flight instructors...

Yeah. Nick has done many GOOD things for PoA. Why suspend him over a "newbie" to PoA. How much longer is he suspended anyways?

Why favor a long-time member over a newbie?
(A question meant to be asked in a general sense - not only in regards to this case. I do ponder the effects of cronyism on these boards - does it hinder or encourage the growth and/or vibrance of the community? and, is that important to a particular community - now and/or in the future?)

That said, Nick is a character, capable of evoking strong reactions - positive and negative - and (I think) is a great asset to the aviation community as a whole. (Look at GoFlyAmerica.org ... great stuff.)

I don't know if following the communication examples of the great apes would help promote a 'family friendly" board.

Sorry, it just made me chuckle when I read it. =]

It is odd to me that you wrote this, as you typify the poster I think does a great job answering your own question.

You take a deep breath, then calmly and concisely point out the errors/fallacies/misunderstanding, and demonstrate why it is innaccurate by citing fact or reason.

The people that can do that, are the people whose advice one can take to heart.

Kenny recently put up a post that offended me deeply. I reacted strongly, but did not call anyone anything (though I think I came close).

Folks, you should not need to be reminded that public discussion of disciplinary action is against the terms of the RoC.
