Ejection Handle Pulled

I tend to agree there should be some differentiation, but i haven't looked into how it could be implemented. Might be a limitation of the forum software. Definitely a discussion worth having.

The other thing with EJP is their posts won't show up in any searches. Which sucks when you're trying to find something you know an EJP posted.

huh?

I have this vague recollection of being able to see at least some of the posts from someone permanently banned. At least at one point I thought I could. Maybe the change in forum software changed this behavior...

Posts may show up in a general search (though I'm not sure they do anymore), but you can't search for them by member.

Edit: Just checked. Yes, if you search for a term an EJP posted, it will return, but you can't limit the results by their member name.

I could literally respond with one word and get EJP

Interesting. Using a test account with fewer privileges than the average user and no mod/admin permissions I can get search results limited to a banned user. The "by (member)" box doesn't autocomplete but if I put in a banned user's name I only see results for that user.

ETA: I searched for posts containing "100LL" by a recently banned member some will recognize. The 5-post message is included to show the lack of permissions. Results:

Interesting. I always figured the fail to autocomplete meant you couldn't search for them. Just tried it and it works. I know clicking on their profile results in not being able to see their posts/profile.

Shouldn’t you be banned for discussing bans? REPORTED WAAHHhhhhh

Yeah, we need to come up with a different way to distinguish who’s in the dog house and who is punished permanently. I think I know how to implement it into the software. I’ll play around with it.

What about “taxi to penalty box” or just “penalty box”

What I find annoying is that I have never been banned in spite of all my smart ass effort.

only if you're on one side of the fence. the other side can get away with bloody murder.

Alas, not easy to distinguish the temporary vs. permabans.

Hmm…

Having spent a fair amount of time in the beer league sin bin….if you make the label too fun, some of us will aim for a temporary ban just to get the label.

Welp, never mind, not sure I do know how.

Banned users automatically go into a single user group and from what I read on the Xenforo forums, there isn’t a way to distinguish temporary from permanent in banned members. :(

@flyingron do you know?

You can either drop users who exceed warning thresholds into a temporary ban or you can drop them into a specialized group. The specialized group can have its own user title. I'm still playing with that.

Specialized group who cannot make any posts? But still has access to the threads? With a specific title.

Oh, it’s hard to believe that people would do that

That’s actually a neat idea. Temporary banned users basically have to sit on their hands for the duration of the ban, permanently banned users are expelled from the board.

Nordo?

Is there a way for us to see how close to the doghouse we are? I’m sure you keep some sort of score for each member like warning points or such? Would a user know? Would we get a warning of sorts or is it just internally?

We were just discussing this yesterday. I don't know if you can see your points total. I'll explore that. Thats something you should know imo.

When you receive a warning, you'll get a PM you about is and the points received.

Alas, no. You should be notified if we have to delete a post. The points (if they were assigned) expire, but if they build up past the threshold you'll get a time out.

It sort of reminds me of my trip to the Titan missile museum. There's a code that comes in with the firing message that enables the fuel pump on the missile. This is to prevent two officers from colluding to launch the missiles themselves (even if they both turn their keys, the thing won't go). To keep you from guessing the code, the thing bricks itself after seven attempts. However, part of the QA at Martin was to test this and they never know how many tries were done (other than it was less than seven). The missile officers were advised to get it right the first time.

It would be very helpful for me to know my points count when deciding juuust how far I can go when making certain posts.....

I think it would be better if the points were just subtracted from the user’s “likes.” When the number goes negative you get a temporary ban.
