A Danish travel agency has come up with a creative way to combat the country’s declining birthrate.

Earlier this week, Spies Travel launched the second year of its “Do it for Denmark. Do it for Mom” campaign, which encourages couples to take vacations that will boost sexual activity --so grandma can have more grandchildren.

The new two-minute spot opens with bleak statistics about Denmark’s declining population and the strain it will put on aging retirees. An older woman wistfully looks on as others play with children, clearly lamenting her grandchild-less status and the possible end of her family’s lineage.

A despondent aging mother contemplates her life without grandchildren.

But then the clip changes its tone and a voiceover proclaims, “Don’t despair. We may have found the solution.”
The answer, it turns out, is to send your adult children on an active, tropical holiday to boost hormones and increase the likelihood of some beach-side copulation.
“As you may already know, people have more sex on a sunny vacation,” the voiceover says, explaining the many ways in which happy, physically engaged people are more likely to do the deed.

So where does mom come in? Along with its new campaign, the travel company has introduced a new feature that allows parents to help pay for their kids’ vacation. Once the itinerary is booked, Spies will offer a discount of up to 1,000 Danish Krone (about $150) toward the holiday package.
The ad finishes proudly, “Do it for Denmark. Do it for Mom. Delivery within nine months not guaranteed.”

I can think of a lot of reasons to 'do it', but never, ever, ever, ever has Mom popped into my mind regarding this.

My wife and I made a decision not to have children so I got a vasectomy. She only has one brother and no other siblings and due to chemo from his cancer he might not be able to have children. So her parents are very upset at me/us as in their selfish minds we are depriving them of the opportunity to be grandparents. Such idiocy.

Breeders are funny. If you don't produce offspring when they tell you to, you are a menace to the society and must be punished.
Do you want to pi** 'em off? Tell them that adoption is smarter. :D

Back on topic: decline in country's birth rate has been statistically linked to two factors: worsening economy and increase in average IQ. Though the first one was mathematically ruled out later because it was conjunctively coupled to the second one.

Offering tax credits and other financial incentives for new families does not always have the desired outcome. So I wonder what Denmark will do besides airing silly commercials. I sure as heck am not gonna think of my mom during vacation sex. :D This commercial might surprisingly turn out to be counter-productive. :goofy:

Our population isn't declining, mostly due to immigration. Japan has these problems on steroids. Little immigration, an aging population and pathetic birth rate.

How can we maintain those things that are important, with a zero population growth rate? Might be something we'll need to look at one day.

Population growth does not equal economic strength.

If denmark stopped growing, they could supply all of their energy needs with renewables. They are at 39% right now, with further gains in efficiency and a shrinking population they can get to 100%. Don't know what happens if they get there, maybe they get a gold star in their homework folder.

I think we need to identify the things that suffer with poor population growth, go from there.
