As a child of the 60's, having lived through the civil rights era, seeing the oppression, segregation, riots, gains of the Civil Rights movement. It is a great day for the dedication of the monument to a man that started the whole movement. I think King would be proud of the progress, but not happy with the pace.

Do you know how much the King family got paid for the rights to erect the monument?

Do you think that the fact that the family are a bunch of crooks eliminates his achievements ?

It is hard to believe that his family has to be PAID to honor him publicly. As far as I know, his family is about the only family that requires such payment to be made to honor a public figure. But then again, they're kind of a dead-beat bunch anyway. :(

Not at all, but I think the actions of his family do cheapen the memory of him and his achievements.

Lets look at the message, and not the messengers.

OK.

Unfortunately, the message, and his memory get used for the wrong purpose, but I agree, the message is one to live by.

Agreed.

I wish GAO had audited the foundation and demanded repayment of the bribes.

The extra money in the till could have been used to have local stonemasons assemble the memorial instead of unpaid chinese laborers.

As a child of the 90s who's watched the now supposedly grown-up hippies trash *everyone's* Civil Rights in the name of Safety, the next generation is quite unimpressed with all this back-patting while laws like PATRIOT still stand.

As a person who could count to 60, 70, and yes, even 90 as a child, I would say that if ever a back deserved patting, it would be MLK's. I don't think that opposing the Patriot Act precludes us from honoring a man who would be Leading the fight against it if he were still around.

MLK was a flawed person just like everyone else but his message and his memory deserve honor.

+1.

Many invoke the man and his memory, for personal gain or for other reasons and ways which are antithetical to Dr. King's teachings; these soiled practices do not denigrate Dr. King's legacy, only the character of those who would abuse it.

And one of my friends from the UK commented earlier today about the color of the marble. The lightest available? Another friend commented that with the air pollution in DC it will be dark enough in a couple years.

That said, his message deserves to be memorialized. It would be nice if it was followed, too.

The saddest fact I know is that just about the worst street in every big city is named for Martin Luther King.

It really was a travesty, that our Constitutional words of all men being equal took that long to become true, and required a Civil Rights movement and law to be enacted. Thank goodness for the Republicans pushing it through.
