DEA parks one in a field

 You just play a name game with the registration, no worries.

Does simply leasing the aircraft cover up the operator? I've seen some of my companies planes listed in the FAA database as Leasing Company C/O My Company, and others just listed as Leasing Company.

Not really.. Even in 2020 the ultra rich will be able to hide their identity... Campaign donations will do that,,, ya know...:redface:

If you tail them to the airport and find their tail #, it's trivial to pick up the broadcasts on 1090mhz and see everywhere they go.

You don't know the half of it...

Last year when the Colorado RV-7 crashed here and killed that couple, I was hired to clean up the mess and assist the NTSB in the investigation to fact that our tower would NOT release the tower tapes or even hint or suggest the pilots last words so we would know what to focus on first really pi$$ed all the investigators off like you cannot believe... It was the next day, with Dave's assistance, I started to set up the rig needed to put Live ATC online.....

About a month after the KJAC feed was up and running I was "approached" by various managers / operators / pilots and they all demanded I take down the feed... Seems the vast majority of the biz jet guys have already blocked their N numbers so they could not be tracked here and the presence of Live ATC has ruined their ability to come and go without anyone knowing.... The more they pressure me to take the feed down, the more I laugh in their face... Needless to say, a few people HATE me.....:D:D:D:D

LOL. Funny.

I ran one of the KAPA feeds for years when I lived close enough. Never had any commentary from the airport but I did it from the house.

Public airport, public spectrum... Be it light waves or radio waves....

Of course the battle monitoring enthusiasts are losing here is that many police and municipal agencies are firing up full time encryption on Public Safety radio systems.

I still have the dispatch recordings of the Aurora shooting. That type of thing will soon be a distant memory.

Technically it's where FAA should already be on ADS-B to actually make it authenticated and useful. But they're pushing a non-authenticated non-repudiated system of tracking airplanes that is 100% useless without it. Garbage in, garbage out.

And I don't see them getting caught up to the 1990s anytime soon.

I'm surprised the N-number hiders haven't made enough waves to get fake call signs for use on air. It'll happen.

Not really. People figure it out.

I run my LiveATC site from my house too, Altho I am less then 1/4 mile from the airport... With the antenna I have I can receive transmissions from Casper and beyond.. I originally thought about basing it at the hangar but there is no net connection there and if there was I am 100% sure they would have thrown me out of the hangar...

In the beginning the tower hated it the worst since they thought radio transmissions are their private property.. Once I mentioned it was oublic airwaves and public spectrum they quickly wised up...

What's the cost for that kind of system? I imagine a decent antenna, some kind of software, and decent upload speed. I've liked the idea but I doubt many people but me would want to listen to KSNL traffic  mostly for work reasons. Jerry Springer is in town today, you know!

Dave from LiveATC sold me a nice scanner for 50 bucks, set it up will the three freq's tower =118.075 / ground = 124.55 / and SLC sector here 133.25.... My local radio buddy had a basically new antenna from the control tower here that the FAA rejected because it had bird crap on it.. He told me it was over 1 grand.... 3 bucks in coax.. I have Charter cable so internet is here... Live ATC only needs 15k. I don't even notice any slowdown...

I run it through an old computer I had sitting around.... So,,, it is a no cost deal for me..... I did such a good job cleaning up that crash and protecting the National Parks resources while doing so that the supervisor appointed me the first contact if god forbid another plane crashes in Grand Teton or Yellowstone national Park...

At least with Live ATC running we will know what was said and that will help the NTSB guys /gals......

Neat. The antenna sounds like the only costly part of the system then. Also neat that you get to be the point of contact :D

Can't the NTSB have the tapes pulled?

They finally released the tapes after the NTSB gal and I spent 4 days completely cutting the wreckage apart to find the problem.. It was a horrorendous 4 days though that could have been made ALOT less grizzly..:hairraise::hairraise::sad::sad::sad:.....

Is that antenna made of pure gold? :wink2:

In the world of amateur radio, “2 Meter” radios operate in the frequency range of 144 to 148 MHz.

For receiving aviation frequencies in the nearby frequency range of about 120 to 130 MHz, would a conventional “2M” HAM radio antenna work just fine?

That's how the name game with the registration is played.

Depends. I had all the gear lying around in the junk piles. Old scanner, made some audio cables, ancient PC, threw Linux on it, had an old antenna and coax from ham radio stuff. Later upgraded the scanner to a BC780XLT because it had better audio and a better aviation band receiver.

I think you can run Dave's stuff on a Raspberry Pi these days.

You'd be surprised how many people listen all day every day. Luckily Dave handles all that bandwidth. You just stream 24/7 at roughly 12 kb/s or so.

If you have an onerous bandwidth cap with your internet provider, watch out for that. I had cable modem and Comcast didn't care.

Not optimal, but it'll work. If you're buying a new vertical they often arrive too long (lower frequency) and need to be cut down anyway. So you just cut less. The band is wider than you posted, also. Most towers are in the 118 range.

You can literally make an antenna out of dry cleaning wire hangers and an SO-239, really. Not difficult. Ten minutes to solder it together. The coax will cost more than the antenna. A simple dipole out of wire will also work fine.
