Pretty amazing. Will you have to partner with someone else or does it automate the other seat?

From what I've seen, you can do either or. If you have a partner, they can be your RIO. If not, I believe there is a somewhat automated RIO, but that you still issue them some commands.

What type of commands? Like “I can’t reach the handles, Goose; Eject” and “Watch the canopy”?

My BIL is planning to buy it, so I’m looking forward to seeing it soon. The F14 is very much a crew oriented aircraft and the communication b/n seats is a big part of proficiency. That will be the hardest part to simulate properly. Cadence, timing, terminology, etc. that develop over time will be hard to replicate.

I wish they’d based it off of the B-upgrade or D-model. That would’ve made for a better sim experience.

Correct, there's an AI built in called Jester that responds to your commands. The real fun is going to be riding as the guy in the back while screaming and pushing buttons while trying not to die. I never thought about it - I am sure the back seater has a stick but I imagine they dont use it much. Maybe they have special HOTAS controls for interacting with the weapons systems? I have been saving for it since it was announced and I can't wait!

Are people creating simpits for these? My C182 SIM is getting a little long in the tooth. (my avatar pic) Thinking of changing things up a bit.

No flight controls in the back seat, and no HOTAS in the Tomcat. RIOs have a joystick that interacts with the AWG-9, and a stick controller for the FLIR but thats probably not included in the DCS.

I’d second that. In addition to other upgrades, you could fly the airplane and not the engines in the later versions:cool:. The Original TF30’s were pretty temperamental, to say the least, in both the F-14 and F-111. Of course I sure this difficulty won’t be duplicated in the Simulation.

    Cheers

I think DCS is using the A+/B model which has the GEs. But I agree, the TF-30s were a disaster for the Tomcat, a terrible compromise that literally cost lives.

I haven't seen any F-14 simpits yet, but certainly folks are doing incredible things with the A-10 and F-18. My DREAM would be to have a two crew simpit to play with this software!

I have a Vive - The screen door effect is the worst part of it. You don't really notice it in games without text but sitting in the cockpit trying to read gauges sitting normally is really hard. There's a zoom button in DCS that helps but it breaks the immersion a bit. Then again it is easy to be distracted by the sheer sense of speed while flying...

I also flew around in the RIO seat last night for the first time, what a ride! I didn't realize the F14 was so analog. Also not much for me to do practicing touch and gos in the pattern but scream for the pilot to slow down.

So @nauga, what kind of trouble could we get into if you had your A-6 and an F-14 in the same place? I don't know much about the A-6 in general except it carried a lot of bombs and later jammers and seated side by side or 4 at a time.

In last month’s Air Combat they had an interesting first person account on the VF-213 Tomcat that exploded during the John Paul Jones flyby. Amazing those two escaped with only minor injuries.

So, even with the VR limitations do you prefer it to using monitors and TrackIR?

Great!! Now I can become proficient in one before I go out and buy one. Now where did my TAP warbirds section go?

TrackIR is a great way to enhance your normal setup while maintaining clarity and quality but to me the VR headset blows it out of the water immersion wise. Its more natural and no matter where you turn your head you can look straight. Plus the 3d glasses effect you get from it makes you feel like you are actually in the cockpit. That is purely my opinion though. I played War Thunder on PC with the Vive on and my neck actually got sore from looking around so much, especially behind me.

I had a Freewing Su35 until I plugged in the ailerons backwards on the first flight...

The A-6 never carried jammers (except the AST-6) The EA-6B was the jammer and we bore little resemblance (beyond the pointy end being on the wrong end) than the A-6. Can't imagine a Prowler sim being much fun except maybe "hey watch me wipe out ATC in this sector)..... (Pugs=2300 Prowler hours)

Granted, there weren't a lot of them, but the electric sports coupe came before the family wagon.

The RIO still works as a contractor out in Fallon. He didn't actually look that old, though maybe he was :) Not sure if he was the one quoted, but the story always sounded pretty epic. I remember watching the video as a teenager, wanting to head in this life direction at some point soon.

I’ve actually seen the effects of the Prowler on ATC radar during an exercise. “Stop buzzer!” Seen the effects of the AWG-9 (RIP) on a PAR as well and it ain’t pretty. :(

Nah it was the pilot. They were on standby for the mission and when primary broke, they got launched. Kind of a last minute deal to test JPJ ability to tract an incoming target. TF30 basically exploded, aircraft banked sharply right on its own, they ejected as it was disintegrating around them. Crazy! Kinda like the Discovery channel special on “Carrier Fortress at Sea” where the VF-11 F-14D had an engine explosion followed by both crew members ejecting at Mach 1.

Thought the little spiny fans were like a wind generator? What’s the purpose of them spinning on the ground?

I thought I saw in the comments that the pilot later died in another crash? I not very familiar with the 213 crash, I’ll have to read about it.
I later flew with the pilot in the VF-11 crash, very nice guy.

Nah, they’re confusing him with another pilot (Lcdr John Stacey Bates). He wrecked one out at sea off Hawaii. Later he and his RIO died just after departure from Nashville. Apparently was his hometown and the parents came out to watch. AB climb right into a low overcast. Minute later the aircraft came tumbling out of the clouds and crashed into a residential area, killing three civilians. I remember it being a lot of controversy because the first crash was blamed on him and some had said he should’ve been permanently grounded. Overall the 90s weren’t too kind to the Tomcat’s safety record.:(
