Dan has an interesting video up about the crash of N4765N and the problem he has with the NTSB in this and other investigations. He's dragging it out, says he has his reasons, but I'm fine with that. I can't figure out what his final goal is here, he is advocating for better pilot training, more transparency and competency in NTSB investigations. He's got my interest, we'll see where it goes, feels like a train wreck waiting to happen, but that may be by design. I'm curious to hear his thoughts on what happened in this fatal accident. RIP to the victims.

Isn't this the guy that is routinely excoriated on this venue for ignorance and bad journalism.

The only think I can say is, Dan, be careful what you wish for. It rarely turns out the way you want.

From what I understand from watching several of his videos, Dan lost a few friends to airplane crashes and is trying to increase safety training for general aviation. I can't fault him for trying to point out a lack of emergency situation training. I've had two flight instructors in my quest to become a pilot. The first never mention anything about what to do if X happens. The second thankfully has. He does seem to have an authority problem though.

I’ve seen Dan focus on aviation safety and partner with folks like Josh Flowers on training AQP etc - good stuff...

but as an auditor myself, what he’s doing will only bring heartache (to himself). He’s messing with an investigation and that will never slide. Whether that’s tomorrow or in 5 years. It doesn’t matter that the government is slow or effective.

As the saying goes, 3 things you don’t mess with: Mother Nature, mother-in-laws, and the mother f-ing government.

I don’t know Dan Gryder but he seems like a horse’s ass in his video. Also - isn’t it pretty common for the NTSB not to travel to the site of GA accidents? My impression was that they focused resources on major incidents.

All I know is, I read the topic as "Dan Gryder is twerking" three times before I read it correctly. I'm in, what seems to be the majority here, in thinking that if he took up twerking it would be a better use of his time.

According to the Atlanta Constitution Journal police said the incident began when two code enforcement officers responded to a complaint of someone driving a car across the runway. When they approached Gryder, he allegedly gave them a false name and then refused to sign six citations. He then boarded the DC-3, started at least one engine and “told one of the officers that if she moved, he would strike her car, police said,” the newspaper reported. The code officer called for backup and police “flooded the area” as Gryder taxied the 72-year-old airliner to the runway.

According to the police, as reported by the newspaper, Gryder held at the end of the runway and “demanded” fuel, which was not provided. He taxied back to parking area and was arrested as he left the aircraft.

Dan is the dude who claims everyone who loses control and stalls/spins attempting to maneuver to a landing following a T/O engine failure is simply due to the pilot not getting the nose down fast enough and quickly stall/spinning. It's not that simple and he doesn't seem to care about the facts of a subsequent investigation. Just looking to push his agenda by jumping to conclusions and posting on social media as soon as he learns of a new LOC accident.

And yet I'd believe him over the NTSB a good deal of the time. And, basically, if you don't lose control (stall, spin, inverted, whatever) when things go south, the outcome will be getter.
He's allowed to be a curmudgeon; he's earned it.

To each their own, but his "analysis" of lots of accidents he comments on is just keyboard captain puffery....like the crash in LA he blamed on the pilot not shoving the nose down hard after an engine failure on climb out suggesting he just stalled/spun right then and there when the pilot actually made his way all the way back around to downwind at the other end of the airport before a fatal LOC accident maneuvering to a landing. His ignorant arrogant assumptions aren't worth a damn in my book.

I thought this video was a real contribution to aviation safety and something I keep in mind in my own flying. The guy might be a tool, he certainly sounds like it some of the time. But I thought very highly of this.

He’s exactly the same narcissist as Jim “Zoom” Campbell was. Similar story. Appears on the internet and makes sense in a couple of places, then he starts saying things that don’t make sense, claiming to have insider knowledge he can’t possibly have — especially knowledge of government malfeasance—, as well as insight that the hoi polloi (that’s you and me) can’t even dream of. Then the criminal past comes out. . . .

After watching his video on “maneuvering speed,” in which he makes up a definition for a term that was already defined well and differently, I vowed not to watch him any more. If Aviation101 and FlightChops are smart, they’ll pull the videos they have with him. They’ve been had.

Exactly, he's leeching off their reputation, I doubt they knew who they were getting in bed with for those videos which all came out around the same time. Let's all not forget his spurious claims of pilot suicide in the case of N3RB.

Have those been shown to be spurious?

But on the other @OneCharlieTango ‘s point. He may have more insight into the mindset of the apparent scammer that owned that plane based on his own criminal past history.

I don't need to meet any such burden of proof, they guy saying a pilot committed suicide before an investigation has even been completed has that burden.

Actually I think in his second or third video on the subject he presented a fair amount of evidence to suggest the pilot was in a life situation where he may well have been motivated to commit suicide. (He was likely looking at the rest of his life on prison.)

I also think the information on how the pilot started the flight and the flight track is very consistent with simply committing suicide by flying high without oxygen.

Though I agree that is speculative until the investigation is complete, I think Gryder in that case presented one of the two or three most likely scenarios. It was not just pure ungrounded speculation.

OTOH, a lot of times he appears to be full of baloney.

His latest part 3 vid, he gets called by the NTSB on the Cessna 182Q Skylane II, N4765N Fatal accident for holding onto wreckage. He says he found the throttle body and found it to be closed. He surmises a couple things. One is the PIC who was practicing stalls with a CFI and he proposes the PIC was scared of them, the CFI was relaxed and PIC locked up pushing down on the yoke in recovery refusing to relent. You'll have to see for yourself all his other "possible" cause, his illustration for "prop disc" "blanking out the tail" saying as the pIC had no elevator authority during the dive to impact.

This guy all by himself created the Delta pilot stigma. From now on every delta pilot that has to listen to someone snicker about how “nice” Delta pilots are can say “oh that guy was fired.”

I first became aware of Mr Gryder when he worked with Flighchops and then Josh Flowers (Aviation101). Who used who for gaining exposure I can’t say, but I’m pretty sure it was not those successful Youtubers. Alas, Gryder went on to insert himself into videos of most successful YouTube personalities (Mat Guthmiller as well, who Gryder has since turned on in a spectacular way). Gryder initially looked like a ‘good’ guy, with good ideas. But lately he has become a complete and utter arrogant bore. Just compare his Youtube ‘Probable Cause’ tone to for instance Juan Brown’s Blancolirio Channel. Mr Brown is always respectful, doesn’t make reprehensible leaps of judgement and accusations without facts, doesn’t have a ‘conspiracy theory’ behind every video, and generally stays positive, respectful and delightful to watch. In contrast I have become more and more concerned, doubtful and suspicious of Gryder. He narcissistically calls out others’ supposed and conjectured mistakes, ill intent and character flaws that he just makes up with no proof, while conveniently completely omit that he, Gryder, has a significant history with the law, including assault. Unfortunately Gryder’s gruff but holier than thou arrogance will likely appeal to many. I wonder how many (for instance Guthmiller, and maybe even Flowers, Steve (Flightchops)), really regret getting into bed with this guy.

Heckuva first post, but I couldn't have said it any better.

It's too bad. When he first came out with the AQP idea, he seemed pretty reasonable. Everyone online brought up his arrest, but I thought "there's two sides to every story and that's in the past". This youtube channel shows that he is still that same guy.

I just can't figure it out. The Gold Seal folks are clearly close with him, and Russ seems like a really good guy, so I can't believe he'd associate himself with Gryder if he is as out there as he seems in his videos. Maybe it's all just a schtick to get youtube views?

It will be interesting to see if anyone turns up for his ACCA fly in this summer. It'll be hilarious when he gives himself all the awards.

I was a little surprised to find this on the board at KFWC in southern IL last week (sorry for the shaky picture). Guessing it's been there a while. The website is still active, but that logo is long gone. I wonder if he thought he was going to start his own AvWeb:

Also, it's apparently impossible to make a video in 9 hours because Dan can't do it.
