Last week was David Brubeck; this week, Ravi Shankar.

This man may have had more influence on 20th Century Western AND Eastern Music than any other of his time. He made the Sitar almost as well-known as the piano, and brought the music of his country to the world.

He and his music had a direct and earth-changing effect on some of the most important names in all forms of music--from "Classical" to Jazz to Pop, and from names like John Cage to John Coltrane to George Harrison.

May you rest in eternal peace, Mr. Shankar, and thank you eternally for your music.

You know what the great thing about a sitar is?......

You don't have to tune it :)

RIP.

And last month it was Elliott Carter. RIP.

That's right. I met him when he came to New England Conservatory. I was learning his Cello Sonata (which is a milestone in 20th Century music), but wasn't quite ready to play it for him when he came.

Wow! He was quite the grand old man of American music, I envy you the opportunity.

I've never heard the Cello Sonata. Of his works I've heard, my favorite is probably the 1st String Quartet, with the Oboe Concerto as a close second.

At NEC we had a program which brought world-famous composers to the conservatory every year. It was absolutely amazing for me to meet people like Carter, as well as Lutoslawski, John Cage, etc.
