Guys, looking to get some custom decals made to put on the fuselage (about 6x6) on my 172. What company do you recommend and anything in particular I should know ....ie material. Also, do I need a letter from God or any other permission(s)? Thanx.

AeroGraphics out of CO is the one I've used the most. As to material, the benchmark is 3M aviation vinyl.

So long as the decals aren't added to flight control surfaces or cover the entire aircraft similar to a wrap, then all can be done under prevent mx to include the sign-off. If you want to include installing them on or partially on flight control surfaces then you'll need a mechanic for any control balance checks, etc.

WHat sort of decals. I've cut a lot of things on my vinyl cutter. No, you don't need permission as long as you don't obscure the N numbers or anything important (like the static ports).

I've also cut friskets on the vinyl cutter and then just shot rustoleum through it to do my N numbers.

I can't remember who I used!! I put my logo on the tail of my 182 in 2023 and it looks as good as it did on the first day. If I can find the order, I'll let you know who I used!

If you slap a decal on a plane, you really don't need to do a maintenance write up. "Washing your plane" is preventative maintenance, so are you gonna make a logbook entry anytime you wipe crumbs off your seat?

Just because something is covered under PM doesn't mean it doesn't need a maintenance entry. There's a difference between performing maintenance and servicing an aircraft. Adding fuel, oil, washing is servicing. Painting is maintenance and requires log entries.

These folks may help.

Not quite. Washing your aircraft is not considered maintenance, preventive or otherwise, for the simple reason its not listed in Part 43 Appdx A. Neither is cleaning in general, fueling, or adding oil which is why a line boy can perform the task without a write up. They all fall under what the FAA considers a pre-flight task. And there's guidance to support that. However, when you get to the "decorative coating of fuselage" and similar items you do elevate to a maintenance item which in this case falls under prevent mx where the work and required sign off falls under a pilot's certificate.

I have a guy doing vinyl stickers for my RV7. I have US roundels being printed at 34” x whatever.

DM me for contact info in Georgia.

So if you pick up an EAA sticker at Oshkosh and put it on your plane, you need a logbook entry?

What do you think? How about for a 6'x6' "sticker" in the context of the OP?
6 foot by 6 foot? His post said 6x6 with no designation on inches feet yards or miles.

I watched a guy use VR goggles to lay out lines on the side of his aircraft. He then stretched vinyl over the lines and the tape lines had an embedded string.

When the string was removed the remaining vinyl was a very neat set of stripes. IMG_8331.jpegIMG_8329.jpeg

I am extremely pleased with the work decals.com did for me. They did the grover/dragon. It's been two years and looks as good as day one. Easy to apply and even with all the oil I have to clean off it, still going strong. I think this one is nearly 2' x 4'

Most of the exterior decal questions I've been asked over the years dealt with large decals, so I answered in that context, ie., 6'x6'. Not much to discuss or offer on a 6"x6" decal.
