I have a Garmin 430 in my panel and I've been maintaining a full set of US charts for that unit. That costs $440/year. I also have a an Android tablet running the DroidEFB App. That provides the same coverage (all of the US) and is more user friendly and has more information than the Jeppesen data. The DroidEFB data costs $74.99/year. I assume both databases get their raw information from NOAA (the publisher of paper charts for the FAA). If both use the same data source and the cheaper one is more user friendly, why should I pay to keep my Garmin 430 updated? I no longer fly IFR even though I have the rating. I fly for fun and that means I'm picky about the conditions. Anybody else struggling with the cost/benefit for Jeppesen subscriptions?

I wouldn't update if I was using the 430 just for VFR

And should you decide to go IFR, you can get a one time download.
