Communal Dining

If the local Pho place had communal seating, you could sit with me and your lunch would double as a broth shower. Haha.

The pho places here in the Bay Area tend to get very busy during lunch, so I try to either take an early, or late, lunch if I want pho so I can avoid the crushing crowds.

Went to my favorite one once, avoided the big crowd, but some guy was sitting diagonal to me (opposite side, one chair over) and he just wouldn't shut up after the food was served. I was reading the news on my phone (which I always do when I have lunch alone) and he kept asking me what I was reading, what industry I was in, and other inane crap.

Now when I go out to lunch with coworkers or friends, of course it's to socialize and talk about stuff. But when I'm alone, I don't want to be pestered. Sure, a quick back-and-forth innocent question or two is fine. But don't sit there and quiz me as I'm trying to eat, like you're writing my biography - leave me the f**k alone.

Meh, communal dining isn't such a big deal. As for conversation up north, it just requires the extra etiquette step of 'the nod'. That's where you make eye contact and nod at each other first acknowledging them as a human first.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite Saturday night events was regularly going down to Ray's fish camp for fried fish and hush puppies. The tables were long split-log tables and the whole place looked like something out of the early 1800's.

I've got no problem with family style dinning as long as the food is good, and the fellow patrons are reasonably polite. These days, its the latter that seems to be the problem.

Agreed...

40 years ago there was Shorty's BBQ on S Dixie Hwy and kendall Dr and Shivers BBQ down by Homestead.... Both had communal seating, both had GREAT food... God only knows how it is now...:dunno:

Please. Just. Stop.

The last 2 restaurants I've eaten at had communal seating. The one for lunch today, that's all they had. I have no desire to rub elbows with a stranger while he sucks down a dozen chicken wings and slugs 22os beers.

My list of restaurants to eat at went down by 2.
lemme guess.....the girls college lacrosse team was eating? :yikes:...I hate it when that happens.

....and this proves it, socialism doesn't work. :D

1st nice restaurant I tried to take my wife to when we were 19 was called skyline or something. It was in Canada so we could have drinks and it is really high up and rotates. They had seating like that we left and went to TGI Friday's on Clifton hills.

Fire House closed... gone the best BBQ in the South.:(

Lambert's has communal seating. Well, actually, every party has their own table but the people at the table next to you are likely to be so big that you'll think they're sitting at yours! :goofy:

I heard they had to change the spacing on the feed troughs....

That's why they throw the rolls, can't get through the wall of humanity to serve them.
