Comms with HEF tower sounded routine. Pilot voice sounded like an older male. Quick IFR release. Departed 16L using ARSNL5 SID. Search of LIveATC for Potomac and ZDC yielded either quiet frequencies or no coverage.
 
63-year-old pilot and 73-year-old passenger identified. Nose gear visible in VSP photo. Unclear if gear extended by pilot or just ended up in that position due to impact.
 
This video captures some of the relevant ZDC comms. If IMC at 20K cruise, a request to climb out of IMC would make sense in response to a failed autopilot.

Looks to be an inflight breakup, debris scattered over 3 miles. There was a fair amount of weather in the area. I’d think an over stress, over speed, or a combination was involved. As to the reason for that to occur, launch the investigation.


Since a fair amount of accidents have adverse weather contributing, keep that ADM finely tuned.
