some how my text didn't make it in prior post with photos. wanted to suggest a cool flight if passing thru Colorado. I highly recommend stopping in Ala Mosa, CO. there's a cool airport in town and near a couple of mountain passes easily navigated.

we flew from Pueblo CO over La Veta pass 9400 ft just west of PUB airport. it's a common pass and has its own identifier VPVPT and there's a low power radio transmitting wx conditions in pass so need to be within about 15 miles to receive it (at least for our old radios)... Ala mosa airport elv 7500 ft on other side of pass.

coolest thing to see is a crocodile and alagator refuge. yes. in the middle of the rockies! the area has a lot of hot springs which is warm enough for these gigantic lizards to thrive even in winter!

there's also the great sand dunes national park, which you can see in photos. you can rent sleds to slide down like snow. there's also hot spring spas and hotels.

heading back we went over MOSCA pass (Vpmsc) 9740 ft next to sand dunes...photo is going thru MOSCA.

it was hot this week so DA was about 3k ft higher than indicated, so check performance. As it gets cooler in seasons, it's do able for most SE depending on weight, of course. would suggest taking a mountain flying course if not familiar. we often descend into larger valleys for cool sight seeing but only during stable conditions and always have a plan based on our c172 capabilities....

so if in the area, highly recommend ala mosa.

The city is Alamosa. One word.

One of the interesting smaller airports near Alamosa is RCV - Astronaut Kent Rominger Airport. Yep, that's the official name.

IIRC his father kept his airplane there.
The spell check kept making it 2 so I relented to tech.

always like exploring airports along the way and RCV is one…just the name is cool ..but it’s always been a hot day and climbing back up to altitude for pass takes too long. Pagosa springs is another good stop…. Lots of hot springs and restraints, but on the expensive side….not sure they still have a crew car.

I'll be driving right past the gator refuge in a few weeks. Never stopped but have always found it odd as well.
