Cleared for visual: straight in?

Are you saying what I related didn't occur, or what tower did was inappropriate? We do have some newer folks in the tower at times, but I wasn't in a position to disagree.

I'm saying, based on the rules of ATC, that there was no need for you to cancel IFR in order to avoid going back to approach.

I would say about 90 percent of my flights end up in visual approaches. You just need to stay clear of clouds and contact tower when necessary. They tell you what they want you to do. On uncontrolled fields I have been cleared for the visual to rwy xx, I just self announce my intentions and do a straight in if nobody is in the pattern. otherwise, i fly the pattern. It seems that approach usually gives you the visual if the clouds are above the MVA.
