Chrome plating small parts?

You’re really sticking to that “I’m just going to throw the engine parts in the corner until I get closer to being done” thing. :)

Well, mark that up as an L.
I thought the chrome was flaking off. I went to pick a piece off when I discovered the copper I was seeing was from the BACK side of the cover. My finger went right through it.

So it seems that diy chrome stripping is not feasible. I'd still like to play with nickel plating one of these days.

My first home galvanizing experiment worked okay.

~10oz distilled white vinegar (a bottle was 99c)
1 tsp epsom salt
1 tsp sugar
1 surplus HO scale model train power supply
1 zinc square from alibabazon, $6.49 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJ34XSH1/

These shackles and clevis pins came off my tailwheel. Two of the sets might be 1950 originals and have some wear and pitting. The other two, I'm not sure; the pins look like they were cut down from longer stock. These will get added to my museum; new replacements will go onto the plane.

Anyway, two of them were covered in rust, but a day in an evaporust bath took care of that. Wirebrushed, cleaned with acetone, electroplated with zinc, and then wirebrushed again:galvanized.jpg

This never would have happened if they were sitting in a box. Just sayin’. :)

Got a job I need to look at right next to durochrome tomorrow...

George, those clevis and pin sets will last about half a century! Good work.

I believe I saw a Bridgeport somewhere in one of these threads. Custom Aluminum Billet Valve Covers.
:-)

Nah -
At this point he’s going to build a kiln, melt medal, and pour a custom set.
Can't make billet parts until you make billet ;)

Yeah, you can't make billet without bauxite. Or at least beer cans.
