Cherokee Six ditched in Long Island Sound

Brrr.... off-shore Long Island Sound water temps are probably still in the 50's. Wonder if the plane was providing some level of floatation by the time the Coast Guard rescue boat arrived the scene? Staying within gliding distance of the shoreline for that portion of the flight may have added another couple of minutes to the flight time, rather than flying the magenta line.

Especially considering they were at only 3,000. PA-32s glide like bricks. Nevertheless, thy managed to survive the ditching, so good on 'em.

Talking with people that know the accident pilot, he reported the tach dropped to zero as the engine quit, while the prop was still turning. At the time I suspected a failure in the accessory side.

Just heard the other day that the crankshaft gear retaining bolt failed/backed out. I wonder if that might drive an AD.
