Hello POA. So after years of putting it off for various reasons, I am finally pulling the trigger to earning my PPL certificate. I have the funding and my wife's sign-off all lined up and squared away, and I will be scheduling for my medical exam in the next few weeks, now I need to find a CFI.

I was hoping to get some recommendations for a CFI that operates out of KCRQ. Also I work fairly close to KMYF and it would be optimal to have someone who can teach out of either KCRQ or KMYF, but not necessary.

I have done the prerequisite searches but haven't turned anything up. Any recommendations would be most appreciated.

Oh and any other advice would be helpful as well.

Thanks

I've looked at the instructors at both Plus One as well as Pacific Coast. There are a lot to choose from, so I was hoping to get some recommendations off of personal experience to help narrow down the list.

As far as planes, I was thinking about joining and renting from Plus One or Pacific Coast, depends on where the CFI is a member of. I've researched both clubs and while Plus One is bigger in San Diego, Pacific Coast has the larger fleet at KCRQ. Either way I would be happy at either.
I have been talking about buying with my wife, and almost have her on board with the idea, wish me luck :)

G'luck

KCRQ is the best!

Buy me lunch at The Landings and I'll give you the full tour. I'm there Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

You're on! Though my schedule for the next couple weeks is crazy. I'll PM you.

Gary also has a pretty limited schedule, cause I think he splits time between Palm Springs and San Diego. He's a really nice guy though and has some really practical tips.

Give Andrea Tornielli a call. He instructs with Pacific Coast Flyers. Really nice guy who loves teaching and isn't trying to build hours for the airlines.

Shouldn’t you be buying HIM lunch??

Thanks Rassi, will do.

That was tongue in cheek but... If we do meet and he comes back to post about it I bet he'd say it was well worth it. I'm not selling anything. Instead of recommending a club or a CFI we're going to sit in airplanes and talk about scheduling. Then we can drop by the clubs, maintenance, check out simulators, look at aircraft availability, discuss costs, etc. Then maybe if he likes a particular aircraft, and/or club I help him compile what he wants and needs, and present that to a potential CFI.

Plus I get to show off my sweet TSA badge, required at KCRQ. There's always that :D

I would recommend Plus One, I've been a member for about two years now and they have a thriving Facebook pilot group with monthly fly outs and happy hours.. plus a quarter dinner. The fly outs are a great way to meet other local pilots. Last time we had 15 planes and 30 people at L05

Plus One's biggest, and most capable fleet is at MYF.. with SEE, CRQ, and sometimes RMN having a handful of planes.. but MYF is their home base with the biggest fleet

CRQ is a nice airport and the Landings is a great restaurant.. however MYF has Casa Machado and is a little less "anti-GA" with the requirement for badges and escorts etc. The controllers at MYF also seem a little more patient since they're dealing with less jet traffic, and no commercial traffic (unlike CRQ which has regularly scheduled commercial traffic now). Personally SEE's controllers seem the friendliest and most patient.. even when they have a ton of planes in the pattern, all with fresh solo signoffs

If you are partial to CRQ though then they have a nice 182 there, 1269S that has two G5s, a Garmin 530, and is very clean inside and appears lovingly maintained. It's a 182 so a very comfortable cruiser and and great plane to brings pax. The 172 and PA28s are a little more "small" feeling to pax.

I made a little video of that 182.
