How big of a deal is a split on the end of a wing skin like this? Rivet is still in there solid, A&P looked and said the rivet was solid, no cracking or internal corrosion and seemed generally unbothered. Plane was painted in 2005 and this split was clearly there then as well.

my thought is to start with the Cessna or 150 service Manual. In Particular

the structural repair section. Research negligible damage in other

categories. It might be a idea to add rivet above and below the

tear area.

I must be blind. All I see is a scratch on the paint and missing chunk at the center rivet.
Where's the tear?

Are you looking to buy this aircraft?
Any record of a repair in that area? Looks like there was and the same skin was used in this location.
Is it correct? No. Is it an issue? Maybe. But need the answers above before can offer more input.

This is my aircraft - I got a pre-purchase inspection but this was missed. No record of any repairs to wing skins in any of the logbooks. No notes in any annual or maintenance logs to be found related to it.

The outboard 2 feet of many Cessnas are what I call a “Repair Panel”.

It can often be replaced after a tip strike rather than a long skin.

It looks to me like it was torn off leaving the “split” you now see.

The rivet in back looks loose to me as well . Probably won’t hurt

but now you have less rivets to carry the same loads and they may

eventually loosen as well.

Refer to #2 for guidance.

If the mechanic that looked at it is the same person that signs your annual every year, then probably no issue. As to no record of repair it could have been done by a repair station which has different recording requirements. Have you looked in the FAA database or ordered the aircraft CD for any records?

but that looks intentional to me.
What it looks like to me is the original rivet was pulled in shear against that skin and they "saved" that inboard skin during the repair. As mentioned earlier, may have been due to a wing tip strike/repair. The photos are bit limiting, but there definitely was some work done in that area.

Keep in mind that the Insurance Co. may pay a role here too.

They are obviously reluctant to pay for repairs that are not NEEDED.

Replacing the inboard skin (6 feet long?) is just about the same work

as repairing the tip itself. While here are options ; someone decided

this was acceptable in that location. I would take a look at the Rear Spar

behind the fuel tank.. Unpleasant surprises hide there.

Is this going to be your forever airplane,I would put my faith in the mechanic that maintains the airplane.
