No, this doesn't reference an early Eddy Arnold recording, or Rex Allen. I'm looking for a job(retirement activity). Not that I don't have enough activities on my plate, but this prospect would be a good gig during the summer months.

It would entail appearing before, though mostly unseen, tens of thousands of paying customers. The most recent person to hold the position has retired after eighteen years. As noted in the thread title, it'll be a cattle call, on Saturday, similar to many I've been through during 40 years of theater auditions, and having 100+ productions under my belt.

So, if any of you are the praying type for "fat chances," think a few words for me. 71 occasions, per summer, of working in the voice booth for the Boston Red Sox organization would be very interesting, I'm sure. But I've been invited to the "corral." Nothing ventured - nothing gained, eh?

It is a paid position for 71 appearances or more, pending potential playoff season.
Clarification: Public Address Announcer at Hadlock Field Stadium, Portland, Maine, for Portland Sea Dogs baseball team.
For those of you who aren't baseball fans, the Portland Sea Dogs are the Double-A Minor League Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. As such, the Sox of today were once proud Sea Dogs, playing their games at beautiful Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury all worked their way through on the way down I-95 to the big leagues.
As I wrote previously, it will be a cattle call re the auditions. Who's to know how many have applied, though I'm lead to believe a lot. As is typical in my theater audition experiences, this will be similar. The Saturday event is for ownership/management to hear voice qualities. After a week, some will be issued a call-back notice for a more extensive audition and interview. BTDT - know the routine.
Interesting bit of history: A bunch of years ago I went to a Portland radio station to record some commercials I had written for my camera store -- three 60s. I had never met the staffer who handled the recording session. So I did the first take on the first 60 sec. spot. Watching the big clock's second hand, I finished at 62 seconds and quipped, "Well, I guess we'll have to do that one again." The staffer, with raised eyebrows, looked into my sound booth and mic(ed), "Wow, very nice; somehow I get the feeling you've done this before." (Yeah; many times on radio, some TV) It turns out that 30 year Portland radio personality is the one whose retirement, after 18 years with the Sea Dogs, has brought about the opening. He called me and suggested that I "give it a shot." So what the hell! I've survived many "I'm sorry but we don't have a part for you in this show" telephone calls over the years. Another one won't kill me, so I'll "give it a shot."

Go For IT!

Thanks; not related to my "possibility" is that a former catcher with Portland
Sea Dogs has just been named Manager of Florida Marlins. It's the first time a former Sea Dog has become manager of a major league team.

Well, it was interesting. It took 15 seconds; first time I ever auditioned while looking down at 7,368 empty seats. And it WAS a cattle call. I was candidate #38 of probably 150+ in line, and it went on until into the afternoon. Nothing ventured - nothing gained! There was no singing for this audition; ownership and management was only hearing voice qualities. From all who read the same short script, out to the empty field/stadium, some will be called back for a more extensive audition and interview. One shall be chosen to be the new Public Address Announcer for the Portland Sea Dogs, the AA- Affiliated Minor League Team of Boston Red Sox. As each candidate introduced himself/herself I recognized several names with whom I've done shows. The PA Announcer who has retired, a radio personality in Portland for over 30 years, was with the Sea Dogs for 18 years. It would be a nice gig to get, 71 games per summer, more if the Dogs were to get into the playoff scenario. It was a fun, though short, experience today.
Photo 1 = the line before me.
Photo 2 = the line waiting after I left the voice booth, and my iPhone couldn't see the whole line.

Lots of competition! Here's hoping you broke a leg! :)

Got any of your voice demos up anywhere online to hear 'em? Or is this just a one-time thing for ya?
