I'm thinking cat claws on that covering. First thing that comes out when cats are scared are claws and those suckers are sharp.

According to one report, it was the flight school's (non-flying) mascot. So it was probably used to the engine noise, in fact, probably moved out to the wing to get away from it (at first).

Certainly didn't panic, which probably would have resulted in it flinging itself out of the airplane. It had the look of a cat in a very uncomfortable situation who didn't have any idea how to fix it. There was enough breeze coming by the wing root that it probably decided that coming out would expose it to more wind.
