My brother in law in Nevada is in his last few months of life thanks to lung cancer and COPD. Yes he was a heavy smoker. No he had no real choice in smoking, he is a schizophrenic and they smoke to self medicate. So no high horse, narcissistic personality disorder comments please. If you want to be a self righteous ass, do it in another thread. I hear there is a good one on tattoos running right now.

Anyways on to the humorous part of the post.....

Over the weekend while having a little pizza for for lunch, out of the blue he says "my one regret is never trying Chicago style pizza."

You see he was always a thin crust pizza loving guy and now as he approaches his end of life he knows that the one great pizza is Chicago style pizza.

BTW may we all face the end of our lives with such grace that when it comes to regrets it is only something as trivial as a slice of pizza. For all the problems this sweet man has faced with his horrible disease. Make no mistake schizophrenia is horrible! He holds no bitterness, no sense of what could have been, he is accepting what is and was.

I'm sorry he's going through this and has had such difficulty throughout his life. But I'm glad you all are having this quality time together before he dies. You going to get him some pizza or is he beyond eating solid food now?

When my mom was dying and didn't eat anything really but Popsicles she called them frozen IVs

I'd prefer a shorter life with a whole mind than the alternative. When my sister was diagnosed with ALS I told her the bright side was should wouldn't share my father's fate (Alzheimers). I meant it. Sorry to hear about your brother-in-law.

Pretty sure I'm scheophric also, I just don't argue with the voices. :D

So, when is the air transport of one freshly made Chicago style pizza gonna happen?

End of life stuff sucks food sure. Hang in there,

FWIW we had a daughter in law that was similar and she suffered, as her husband and children suffered (though differently). You and your brother have my sympathy. That disease is nothing to joke about and I hope everyone keeps their sick humor to themselves.
If there is time, you seriously need to find a local Chicago style pizza place nd get him one, pronto.

While you're at it, remember to take care of yourself. Get rest, hydrate properly and be ready to help when things suddenly shift, as they always do. Your strength might be all he needs at the end to continue to be graceful.

Prayers for him and you.

Scott, sorry to hear this news. Both diseases are very high on the Crappy list. My thoughts go to you and your BIL and family. I agree with you on the philosophy issue, if all we regret when it comes our time is something small like not having tried a certain food well then that is not such a bad regret.

buddy used to spend 40 bucks to have a half baked chicago pizza overnighted to him(in boston.) pick up the phone and get your crazy bil a chicago pizza.

Last time I was at Midway, My copilot and I each brought a Giordano's pizza home with us. When we got to SAV to drop our passengers off, the line guy had seen on flight tracker that we came in from Chicago. He was telling us how he was from Chicago and how much he missed it. My copilot, who is single, gave him half of his pizza. The man actually cried!

I've seen what schizophrenia can do. That's a bad deal. But your comment was good - if, after well that, the only regret is missing out on a Chicago pizza, then it sure seems like a life well lived.

We have several Giordano's Restaurants in Orlando and it/they isn't/aren't up to Chicago standard by any measure.

Sorry to hear about your B-I-L, lots of bad ways to go and cancer is on the top of my bad way list. Buy the man a pizza! Like other have said, call and get it shipped, a lot worse ways to spend $40-50 bucks and you can share it with him. :D
Buried my best friend's dad Saturday, he was 72 had a massive stroke with bleeding on the brain last Sunday. He collapsed and never woke up. Shock to the family, but he didn't suffer.
My dad has always said, "Never feel sorry for a SOB that drops dead from a heart attack" And the older I get the more sense that makes, quick, relatively painless, and you're gone. Seeing 90 year olds in nursing homes ain't my idea of living. :mad2:

Easy, I do believe that there are a few places in chicago will ship. When I think of one of my favs I will send the name. Right now having brain fart!

Sorry to hear about your BIL. Now go get him a pizza.

How bouts a new charity: Pilots n pizza. Deliver favorite hometown pizza to terminal patients dying somewhere else...

Scott, prayers for your BIL.

I'm sure you know this, but Lou Malnatis has 1-800-LOU-TO-GO. I'm not kidding, they are excellent. We used that all the time when I lived in the Carolinas.

I can't endorse this enough.

FWIW he lives in Las Vegas. We already have all the Chicago joints figured out. I have spent far more of my life in LV than I ever care for. There are a few Chicago pizza joints that go with the several hot dog and beef places. No reason to ship him a pizza. I'll be there in a few weeks and we will set him up then.

yeah...if it worked for Hawkeye to get some ribs sent to Korea, it should work to get a pizza from a top pie shop to your bil.

He is not crazy.

Surely he meant, "Crazy, because he preferred thin-crust pizza"?

All joking aside, I pray for all of you, and salute your respect and kindness for your brother.

I have a similarly-afflicted sister (head, not lungs), and it's easy to trivialize if you're not there. I know this.

It is not about PC. It is about having compassion, empathy and not being an asshat. It is also not true. So it is also about not appearing ignorant.

My bad, I got my definition out of an older DSM.

I'm really sorry for both you and your family. Losing a loved one is never easy.

That being said, I fear he is already delusional if he things Chicago pizza can even hold a candle against New York pizza.

1st off… I'm sorry about your brother

My wife spent her 20s in Chicago and will say nothing compares to Lou Malnatis

I'm sure there are good Chicago style deep dish pizzas in Las Vegas, but if I can make a suggestion… order one sent in from Chicago.

It's not the flavor per se… it's the thought that you brought from Chicago for him that makes it more special

Her favorite pizza shipped from Chicago is sausage by the way:D

When the Mayo Clinic un–diagnosed me from ALS, one of the 1st things I said was… “I guess this means I have to start getting regular colonoscopies”

Having looked down the barrel of that gun for 4 years… I wouldn't say ALS is a better thing to have than Alzheimer's.

Maybe for the family, but not for the person suffering with it

How did that happen, Jim? Was it a blown original diagnosis?

How did that happen, Jim? Was it a blown original diagnosis?

2 blown diagnoses over a four-year period.

Diagnosed the 1st time in 45 min. and one EMG at an ALS clinic…

Undiagnosed by his colleague 6 months later and a spinal cord injury fixed…

Re diagnosed a year later when hands started going by 2 of his colleagues…

Finally got tired of doctors not listening to us and not thinking outside the box and went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where they told me I “out lived ALS” and spent some time thinking about what else it could be.

Lesson learned… be careful what specialist you go to, because you have a 90% chance of having their specialty when you leave their office.

Sorry to hear about your travails, glad it didn't turn out to be ALS. Nasty ride. That said, the spectre of Alzheimers has been stalking us for some time. Both my sister and I are academicians. The thought of loosing it in that way is truly frightening.

Not that ALS is any picnic either. At least its quick, sis din't last long. My old man was around for 15 years getting nothing but worse. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Another ringing endorsement for Lou's. All the best to you and your brother in law.

It's all a *****… didn't mean to minimize Alzheimer's at all.

My dad died from it after 5 years, and his mother was the same before him

Sorry you'll have to go thru that with BIL but glad he doesn't have to go thru it alone.

Finally got him his Chicago style stuffed pizza.

Went to this place: http://www.amoretasteofchicago.com/ I can attest that this is the real stuff. It was good, sauce a little sweeter than what I am used to, but not all that much. I like it!!! I recommend it for real Chicago style stuffed pizza west of Rockford, IL.

Too bad there isn't someone doing that somewhere I wouldn't have to send any money to the most corrupt city in the U.S.

Sorry to hear. If you would like to order a Ginos East Pizza and have it shipped, here is the link:

http://www.ginoseast.com/shop-and-ship/

Awesome pizza that I lived on while in school in Chicago. If you order a sausage and cheese, they ask you if you want the sausage broken up or not. Otherwise it is just a slab of sausage! One slice will but you under the table.

Gettin' hungry just thinking about it......

Meh. Once you've had Brooklyn pizza, you've reached the pinnacle of pizza. Everything else will be a letdown.

I only had "Chicago" pizza once. The quotes are because I had it during a layover at ORD, and even I don't presume that airport pizza represents the best of the local art. (Although I must say, the food at ORD is far from the worse airport food I've ever eaten.) It wasn't horrible. It just wasn't great. Nor was it pizza. Too much bread. I couldn't fold it for the life of me.
