Can I add this to my airport count?

I'll never get to fly there, but ever since I heard the tower was still standing i wanted to visit. @masloki and I ebiked down to what used to be Meigs Field. I made a LOT of MSFS takeoffs here, less landings ;)

I did not know that tower was still standing. Not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.

Would have loved to have flown there. Flying in/out of Meigs, and flying on the Concord - my two biggest aviation regrets. Could have done both, but lost them to “someday”.

I landed there in a 210 once upon a time.

One day at the end of a sim session in the 777, we had some extra time. The instructor asked if there was anything we wanted to do. I asked if Meigs was in the data base. It was. Granted, it was at minimum weight, but I landed the sim at Meigs. We were stopped with about 500 feet of runway remaining. A very capable machine.

Glad to see that the tower is still there. I've been there when it was still an airport. I still hold a grudge against Chicago for what they did to it.

Reminds me of Robert Mueller’s tower, except the airport has been redeveloped around it. I’ve arrived/departed via Mueller, but never been able to log it.

Same at ABIA/KAUS, but I’ve logged a few approaches there. Prior to that it was Bergstrom AFB where I was a member of the Aeroclub, but it got shuttered before I could start lessons.

I do have a takeoff and landing logged at Reese AFB (KLRF) though.

End of my trivia for the night.

It's not in great shape. One of the wall panels was pushed out like it had been hit by a vehicle from the inside, and haphazardly patched with plywood which itself was falling off. Don't think it's getting any maintenance; who knows how long it will stand.

That's awesome Greg. Back in the eighties, before I was a pilot, I played around with a buddies flight simulator on his computer. Meigs field was the default. It was Microsoft. I don't like Microsoft much these days for reasons I don't want to get in to, but I really loved the crude graphics of the flight simulator. Now we demand more.

Cool!

Of course, there's also the time an actual 727 landed there before being moved over to the Museum of Science and Industry: https://www.msichicago.org/science-at-home/videos/plane-truth

Nope, can’t do that from just biking there, it’s not an airport. Unless. You could plan to fly there and intend to land and then take off again. Then it becomes an airport. So fire up the plane and do it. I see some flat enough spots I think you could pull it off.
FAR 1.1
Airport means an area of land or water that is used or intended to be used for the landing and takeoff of aircraft, and includes its buildings and facilities, if any.

Balloons and lawn chair are a great idea.

Maybe more practical would be to land there in an ultralight, then depart.
