builds his own flying B17

That's going to draw a crowd whereever he takes it. Not just Oshkosh.

It will no doubt make many "ain't that the damndest thing you ever seen" lists.

I think Oshkosh is the least likely place to draw a crowd - There's too much other stuff to look at! Heck, midget Mustangs are commonplace, what's so special about a midget B17? Now maybe a midget B17 escorted by midget Mustangs... :D

I'll take a glance at it, but then I'll go over and look at the real B-17's.

Now that's just awesome. The two things I'd really like to build someday would be a B-17 replica and a P-38 Lightning replica. The P-38 I'd use a pair of Jag V12s for since I have those things littering my basement.

Hm. What scale would you have to use for the P-38 to get the nacelles bog enough to hold the engine? Presumably, you'd have to use a big enough one to take not just the engine, but a PSRU as well.

The actual size of a V-12 Jag is probably 1/2 size of the real powerplant that came in a P-38 so based on that I would guess a 1/2 scale model would look correct. IMHO

Ben.

I will fully admit to having performed precisely zero research other than thinking "Hey, that would be really cool..." regarding this endeavor. :)

A bunch of people have used Jag V12s in replicas of various V12 powered warbirds. The 6.0L V12s made a bit over 300 hp @ 5000 RPM from the factory. A 2:1 reduction gear setup would work nicely for that. Even the 5.3L V12s made about the same power at 5500 RPM, so still acceptable prop speeds with a 2:1 reduction. The biggest problem with the V12 is its weight (700 lbs not including the cooling requirements). I would say cost of parts is an issue, but when you compare it to the cost of aircraft engines, it actually becomes economical. All falls under the category of "Things I'd like to do someday."

Name another 4 engine replica out there.

I had a buddy in SoCal who built a B-29 with about a 20' wingspan... little radials he made (he's an expert machinist/tool maker), retracts, bomb bay doors, the whole 9 yards. Took him like 3 years and God knows how much money to build it. Went with him to see it fly one day and he hands the control box at me... "Are you insane?!? I fly planes from inside them, I don't have a clue as to how to fly with those controls..." I'd be more confident in not crashing a real B-29..."Well you let me fly your plane...":frown2::frown2::frown2: Yeah, I was in it at the time....
