i have a co worker stayin up in the buffalo area for a while. He would like to start flight training for his PPL. Does anyone have recommendations up there?

there's a large flight school ( http://prioraviation.com/flight-school/ ) based at KBUF (I've used them when visiting relatives to take the kids flying). There's one out east, at http://www.clearairaviation.com Lancaster (BQR). Unfortunately, it was July 4 and everyone was booked or on vacation.

Downside of KBUF is the traffic but the school does have fairly newer airplanes. Check airnav for school in the area.

Either way, make sure they take a scenic flight over the Falls.
