Rumors which indicate the Iranians shot it down accidentally.

If it went down "shortly after takeoff, inside Iran", I don't think that "track log" is using real time data.

You might be surprised. With all the ADS-B geeks setting up home stations and feeding everything in.

There is a Twitter video showing the plane going down and what can only be described as a heck of a lot more than “technical problems” unless they mean technical problems with their missile targeting systems

Nothing like shooting down an airliner from the folks who sold you the missile system...

    RIP. 180 souls.

This will get spun. Hoping the nations with citizens on the flight can get the truth about what happened without the spin. MH17 comes to mind.

And Boeing's ex CEO Muilenburg gets a multi million dollar parachute severance package. After the 737 MAX, he should just get the boot!

Crash site is spread out over six miles, a very high altitude midair breakup.

This doesn't seem to match with reports that there was a fire.

This is a weapons free problem...and doubtful the black boxes will be released by the Iranians. Then again just my speculation...

Those holes... inward-facing (meaning something went through from outside-in)... all over the fuselage and wings and tail...not just where you would find them if an engine blew apart... I dunno. 3 year old 738... Either way, RIP to all on board.

This crash will be the subject of much discussion, and rightfully so. Given other world events occurring relating to Iran presently (whether related or not) the discussion of this particular aviation tragedy is one that is likely to "spin" (head towards the Spin Zone), and there have already been multiple posts heading that direction.

Given this, the MC has decided to lock the thread for the time being, with the intention to unlock it in the future discussion when the aviation can be separated from the politics.

The other thread has been closed, apparent concerns of spilling over into international pollitics. However, hard to see how that can be avoided. The latest news -- which seems to go beyond speculation -- is that the only two feasible explanations are an onboard bomb or a shoot-down. That comes from a British aviation safety expert, interviewed on BBC's annual hour on NPR. His arguments are that 1) the aircraft was clearly on fire and breaking up on rapid descent to the ground (caught on video). 2) No distress calls or communications to ATC over at least a couple of minutes, starting at 8,000' altitude. 3) With the next gen 737s (800-900 series), a spontaneous in-flight break-up is more or less impossible, even after an uncontained engine failure.

I'm restricted from adding a link until 5 posts (just joined today), but someone should be able to find it.

There are significant new developments in this matter, and this forum should be open for discussion. Thank you for your consideration.

Hard to have any kind of discussion on the topic without it getting political.

Dumb questions: what’s BT, and why is it a hotspot for this airliner crash?

As mentioned, BeechTalk. You can go to PPRuNe or The Purple Board, or Jet Careers and probably find threads with opinions as well.

What you should know is that it doesn’t matter what is opined on or released by an accident investigation board now, or in the future, is likely not entirely factual and that is without regard to who or whatever body or bodies participate or are quoted.

Folks, we have had a lot of discussion within the MC on this and we are not at a consensus at this point. Know that we are discussing it and will let you all know what’s decided when we have a consensus.

In the mean time, please be patient.

It's not so controversial up here. As our PM said, there's strong intelligence from multiple sources (not just the US) that Iran launched surface-to-air missiles. The PM acknowledged it's quite possible that it was unintentional, but has requested that Canada be involved in the investigation, since 63 Canadians died in the crash (a number from here in Ottawa, including 5 university students).

There you go: just what we actually know, no conspiracy theories, no partisan politics, no sabre rattling.

There's not much good that can come of this, but at least that's a step forward.

As much as it might be tempting to condemn, we unfortunately live in the glass house of Iran Air 655, the Airbus that was shot down mistakenly by the US Navy, killing 290 on board in 1988.
