Bo crash Alton Bay (B18)

That’s a club operating rules and insurance decision. Our partnership has formal operating rules; neither those rules nor our insurance policy prohibit off airport operations.

Our club allowed off airport landings and ice runway operations only in their fixed gear aircraft. We were not permitted to use the retracts for off airport operations. Back in 2009, I landed at B18 in an Archer. Little to no x-wind.

I see they have taken down the clip of a Yankee landing where he made the same mistake as the recent Bo incident. Stay on the centerline!

This had zero to do with it being a ice runway

Many paved runways with far worse things to hit if you stall it in before you even get to the threshold

Most of the challenge here is in ones head

Given the risks, I am puzzled by the popularity of that place. I assume it's mostly for the bragging rights.
Our insurance premium just went up a bit again.

What risks?

Your insurance was going to go up ether way

It’s a product and a business, and they will always charge as much as their believe the market will bear

Their sales pitch (“reasons”) for price increases is just a nice sales pitch

I understand but the A36 is a big plane for a rental club. I’ve seen videos of that airport and planes skidding and sliding hitting snow banks. Also the danger to parked planes from out of control planes. Juan had the grass fly in where a MAULE took out a Cessna 180 parked. Just have to try to limit losses.

Never thought of a Bo as a big airplane before

The video you’re talking about, again zero to do with grass, the guy didn’t have much control before or after he touched down, his rudder skills were near nil which is what caused the accident, he had also wiped out a C180 before

Twas the Indian, not the arrow
