My birthday is coming up and I am coming up with a list of gift ideas (aviation related) :)

    What I have already:
    - Bose A20
    - Clarity Aloft
    - iPad mini 4
    - iPad Knee Board
    - iPad RAM Yoke Mount
    - Stratus 2S
    - Yaesu handheld radio
    - Anker portable backup battery
    - Pulse oximeter
    - Paper charts (because I know someone would make a remark about this)
    - Ogio backpack (my "flight bag")
    - Cheap flashlight in the plane already

    List of possible gift ideas:
    - ACR Electronics ResQLink
    - Survival Kit (I know its cheaper to build one, but maybe one pre-built would be nice - My Medic makes some nice stuff)
    - Pocket CO (carbon monoxide detector)
    - Petzl Actik Core (headlamp for night flying with red light - great headlamp)
    - Vans RV7, RV8, RV10, or RV14

Any other cool aviation stuff to add to the list?

Little Johnny comes in handy though. Just don't attempt to empty it while in flight out of the window. And if you do, don't tell anyone like one of our pilots did at the flight school.

There might be something to this. I had a kid (15 years old) in the back who was getting sick. I told him the bags were in my flight bag next to him (standard type). Long story short, he couldn't find them quickly enough and decided to use my flight bag (WTF). I spent a good hour that night in a hotel room trying to clean it up. The moral of the story is have them handy and make them easy to find...

Something you can do now is to get a small penlight and have that on a lanyard around your neck. Especially during night flying when you may not have time to fumble in your flight bag for it.

I so wish I could out an IFR GPS in my Cherokee but I'd be kidding myself to think my dad would agree to spend that kind of money.

Oh man, but you got to know how to brief your pax, otherwise the barf bag is more of a reason to barf.

NEVER say "if you feel sick here is where the barf bags are" you just planted the barf seed, no bueno

Basically say, if you want to put your phone or camera anywhere, feel free to put it in this pocket, it's more or less empty minus, uhh what's this, yeah a pen, barf bag, other pen, yeah don't worry about that stuff, so yeah feel free to put anything you want in there.

    Or something along those lines

It took us months to decide to do it. Maybe could even say years. But the weakening of the transition routes and airway system design falling apart for VOR nav, plus the need to do ADS-B OUT and finding it somewhat silly to put a GPS source of some sort on board and then not be able to use it for anything, forced our hand.

We still could have waited a couple of years more, but we decided to "get er done" and keep the airplane IFR "viable" into the distant future since it does make for a decent IFR platform and traveling machine that way.

Plus I can stop being annoyed by controllers who think 500 mile "direct" clearances are helpful to a /A or /U aircraft. LOL. No more explaining that we can't accept it but we are "vector qualified"... Hahaha.

We decided we'll never see more than half and probably less of the money back at sale, but it does make a sale "more possible" if we needed to sell. And we'd probably take a price PENALTY air someone was kicking the tires who didn't have the cash to do the upgrade and wanted an IFR machine out of the aircraft overall.

One could argue as to whether you'd take that price hit downward, but if you do, that can be factored into the rationalization that you'll "get some of the money back" on avionics upgrades. In a reverse sort of way.

Mostly it just broadens the market who'd be willing to buy the aircraft if we had to sell. And we'll also enjoy the capability ourselves, of course.

Co-owner isn't instrument rated. He may do it once we have a GTN in the panel. With the failed/INOP DME, being /U in a /G world is problematic at best. So it was time.

Yea I totally understand. We would be more likely to do it if it wasn't a Cherokee 140 lol. Reality is it probably isnt the best IFR platform...although I do plan to my Instrument training in it.
