Basic Med- Anal exam???

There's a Letterkenny bit that while applicable, would definitely put this one to bed.

I deleted a few posts that while amusing, were probably a bit beyond the PG rating of the site, pending moderator review.

so we can thank some lowly congressional staffer for including this item in the checklist?
My usual understanding is that there aren't enough pilots to meaningfully risk a violent uprising to such ... ideas.

Whenever I hear about a needless haze our government forces on pilots, I try to imagine what might happen if any level of government tried to apply the same treatment to any significant portion of 200,000,000 licensed drivers in this country before they ensconced themselves behind a 6,000 lb. missile going 75 MPH <10 feet from traffic traveling the same speed in the opposite direction.

Is the point that a DRE may detect prostate cancer?
Your doctor should be doing that, and a PSA test, every year anyway.
(I put it off. Now I have high-grade prostate cancer, and go to the NIH for experimental treatment. No flying in my near future.)

Why does the basic med exam checklist include examination of the Anus? How does that affect my flying ability? And yet specifically excluding pelvic examination? Last I checked the anus is in the pelvis and immediately adjacent to said organs.
You should check more often in case it were to come up missing.

As someone who was assaulted by a doctor decades ago, this is a huge part of why I don't fly anymore. Have a SI and expired medical cert, really no option but BasicMed because of the nature of the SI, and...I can't bring myself to do it. Zero reason for docs to be checking this when an AME doesn't.

Congress put it in the Basic Med requirements, but probably should not have. As they say, hindsight is 20 / 20.

Nothing requires a physician conducting a BasicMed exam to physically inspect your anus. A simple "how's everything down there?" Is sufficient to check the box, just as an AME typically does. If a doc does insist on looking down there, you're the customer, you have a right to refuse.

In the military physical exam you have to take before going to boot camp, they make you spread em nice and wide so the doc can get a good look down there

May be kinder and gentler now, but when I went thru MEPS in 82, they lined about 100 of us up against the wall in a gym. We all turned around, dropped our drawers, and bent over. A doctor started at one end with a box of gloves and an assistant with a trash can. He was done in 10 minutes.

That really sucks. Find a good doc and discuss with him/her. Don't let some scumbag decades ago control what you can enjoy now. The best revenge is being happy.

Find a psychologist and get some counselling if necessary. There is no shame. I saw one when my son died. It was a lifesaver.

OKC would merely cite the counseling as another reason for anal exam, or at least its equivalent. The mere title ("Special Issuance") makes it sound as if they believe that they are doing us a favor.

Sorry to hear that. I have been having a DRE now since I was 50. Not a big deal for the annual physical with my PP, but the FAA should not be forcing it on the pilot population.

It is your rectum, the part inside, that doctors check. The anus is simply the portal nearest, and jibes with finger length.
