The city council of Banning, CA voted to close their airport.

I think the Banning Hammer retired from duty due to his stiff healthcare plan not covering his Viagra copay any longer. (Any longer. See that?)
 
You need to put this over on the Red Board where they claim to do something about these things.
 
Well as someone who has experienced all that is the awe of Banning, taking out the airport pretty much means there is zero reason to ever go to banning again lol

If his healthcare plan doesn't cover Viagra, how can it be a stiff plan?

I've flown over it a number of times, never landed there or felt the need to really. It was a "fly over" airport when going around Big Bear, PSP, HMT, VNY, etc. So I won't miss it, but the closure of any airport is unfortunate

I was reading about the movie One Six Right last night and had no idea that on average we close one airport every day. That's sad, and it made me think of that guy who filed three reports against the paramotor pilot. Why do people hate aviation and our sport / hobby so much? Why do people think an airport in their town is such a big bad waste of space? Do that many people really want another stripmall WalMart / McDonalds / KFC in their town?

They had cheap fuel, but you had to get the dude from the res to come over and pump it, only reason I'd go, though big bear was cheaper just a little more of a flight from PSP.

If those values are correct, less than 4 aircraft a day landed there - in other words - the airport is not self supporting.

That precipitous drop is most likely indicative of something happening on field that is pushing people away. Poor/unfriendly management is likely. The hangars being dilapidated is a sign of poor management or a city that does not want to invest in its infrastructure.

There are a lot of really poorly managed airports that do rather well.

Yup. And Banning probably has the worst possible location in Southern California. I am not sure why that airport was built in that location in the first place.

I always wave to it as I am flying to Palm Springs.
 
It's a good reporting point in what usually seems like a wind tunnel.

I've only flown from KFUL to KPSP in a C172 a few times. I guess now when you come through you can report your position in regard to the "former" airport.

All that withstanding, All Airports Matter.

So true. The place is a ghost town.

I did a night landing there during my training, on an inky-black moonless night. So spooky to see the "black holes" of the mountains on either side. I stayed directly over the lights on I-10!!! Don't care to repeat that flight ever.
 
Are there any grant assurances there? If so, maybe the city council was emboldened by the FAA's caving on Santa Monica.

Because the Hammer got stiffed when his plan refused to soften their policy?

I'm always bummed out to hear about another ignorant municipality closing an airport. It used to be a point of pride to have an airfield in your town. Now it's a hinderance. The times, they are a-suckin'...
