WEST JORDAN -- A small plane crashed near the South Valley Regional Airport in West Jordan Saturday, killing the pilot.

The plane flies advertising banners over Salt Lake Bees baseball games and was taking off to fly a Saturday night game around 5 p.m. when it crashed. The banner landed not far from the crash site.

Bob Goodlow witnessed the crash. He told KSL NewsRadio the plane rose at a steep angle, but was moving too slowly and couldn't gain enough elevation.

What kind of plane is that? Fabric covered. A J3 Cub?

It sounds to me like it stalled at the banner pickup.

From the vid, low wing, strut braced, roll cage around the cockpit. Possibly Ag Cat or piper colt type?

Possibly a Piper Pawnee or a Callair.

It'll show up Monday evening in the FAA incident database.

Banner guys say the pick-up stall is their nemesis. Looks like they're right.

A woman was killed at KSEE in El Cajon a few years ago after stalling while taking off with a banner. Myself, I think the banner advertising companies just use low power airplanes as a cost cutting measure. I see these little planes struggling along the coast past my store almost every day when the weather is nice.

There should be some sort of a horse power minimum limit put on those planes.

I didn't take any pictures of them, but it sure looked like glorified ultralights pulling some banners along the beach in Cancun in April.

The accident photo looks like it came down horizontal and landed flat...then burned. The structure doesn't even look like it's crushed or anything. I bet it was fully fueled though, very sad...
