That superstition about green race cars was a U. S. oval track racing thing. It didn't exist in sports car racing types here or in Europe.
Gaston Chevrolet (younger brother of Chevrolet Motor's founder Louis) won the Indianapolis 500 in 1920 with a green car. Later that year, he was killed driving the same car in another race. After that the color green was avoided in US open wheel racing until Jim Clark won Indy in a green car in 1965.
Gotta love superstition.
