Hi, I need to travel here in a few weeks. It seems to be in a bit of a bowl nestled in the mountains. Anyone have have any experience or tips? Looks like it might be best to snake in from the south following a road through a pass between two 3700’ peaks. TIA.
 
I'm based just over the hill to the north at 0A9. I've never been into Avery county airport because it's shorter than I prefer to use. I have landed just South of there at MRN which is a very nice airport with a helpful accommodating fbo. I would use it as an alternate.

That area got hit pretty hard by Helene. I might call before going in there. If the wind is up that area can get sporty as they say.
 
Thank you very much! I have to give a speech there but if it is too sporty will land at MRN and drive in. 3000’ is plenty long but the topo seems pretty tight.

If you do have to go to MRN, they have a couple courtesy cars. At least they did as recently as last year, so I would bet it would make for an easy alternate.

If you Google Earthed 7A8 you might have noticed the nearby mining.

So, fair assumption you haven't been to 0a4? Was looking at a machine about a mile from there but didn't care for the runway condition pireps, although they may have done something to it.

My house is less than 5 miles from there. I haven't flown in there for about 20 years though. That's due to my wanting a longer runway for a lancair, not due to runway condition. I can't offer a pirep on runway condition. 0A9 is pretty close; they have rental cars but no courtesy cars. Some of the linemen at 0a9 are cfi. You could call there, ask for a pirep on runway condition at 0a4 and inquire about a car if you went to 0a9.
