Anyone know where I can get these specific years or cycles? Or is there a way to update the info in the Garmin 430/530 desktop training app - which I know is a stretch.

I don't know of a regular source for old approach charts. I have a few from my local area, but those are generally decommissioned VOR approaches retained for training.

But the Trainer database can be updated. I usually do it about once every 6 months unless I hear about a local change that's significant). Thanks for the reminder. I'm due.

I've gotten it from a GNS but it's a bit funky because the process of updating the protected GNS data card makes the file disappear. Unless you are computer savvy, better if you know someone with a G1000 or other unit using the Garmin Database Manager for updates.

The nav database on the updated G1000 card for example is a file named avtn_db.bin. The database for the trainer on your PC is worldwide.bin, typically located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\GNS400W-500W Trainer\Trainer\worldwide.bin. Change the name of the new avtn_db.bin to worldwide. bin. Backup the original worldwide.bin just in case and replace it with ther new one.

(BTW, the process is similar (not exactly the same) for the older G1000 Trainers. AFAIK, It does not work with the new GTN trainers)

Thanks... I don't have access to the G1000 update thingy... We'll find a workaround.

Appreciate all the help you give here.

Same for the GNS 480. All you need is any db file (you can just copy it off the card in the unit because it's just a standard NT filesystem on a CF card). They disabled the unit checks so any file will work.

So all I have to do is find someone with a 430 and make a copy of their most recent update and go from there?

I have a 375 and this what I am seeing will the atvn_db.bin.siff work?

Only one way to find out. Change the name and pop it in as I described earlier.

What’s in the two subfolders?

ldr_sys has a file called grm_feat_key_000.bin

The maintenance file is empty.

All going to be moot soon... The CFII I am working with for an IPC is real persnickety about my mastering the 430 as that is what is in the plane we're using. I keep telling him, once we're done chances are slim I'll never touch another 430 as I fly behind either a 375 or a 650. But, will keep the app on the computer to practice with during the long useless, boring, annoying, and uninformative 90 minute monthly company wide conference calls..:):p:D:cool:

The 430/530 update process is a bit weird. Special cards, special transfer hardware. As I recall from the one time I pulled it off a 430 update, it took a few tries to realize that the app-usable nav database was a disappearing file. It was created on the PC in a temporary folder during the update process, morphed into something that only the unit could use, and then disappeared. Getting it involved locating the temporary folder where it was created and grabbing it before it disappeared. You'd probably have more luck pulling it from the 375 or 650 update (although I've never done that).
