Approach procedures in a retract

Well, like most people, I never got any instrument training in a high performance or complex aircraft as part of my IR, which is why I'm exploring it now. I'll try out your procedure.

I did my entire IR training in a 172RG, on an ILS, the gear was coming down at GS intercept. On a VOR approach, it was coming down when I was inbound after the PT.
 
I was taught gear and flaps (well ok full GUMPS) two miles before FAF or GS one dot above. That way you're not changing config while beginning descent. You'd do it earlier in faster planes but this is the dope for mine.
