My neighbor at the airport who flies for FedEx says they have several 727's that they would like to give away to schools or possibly museums. He's delivered one and says they take off the nameplate, flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder and leave the rest.

Have seen one at Lakeland home of sun n fun looks great

I spent 8,000 hours of my career in the B727, the -100, -200, -200ADV flying different variants of the JT-8D (-7, -9, -15, -17) :thumbsup:

The 727 is a great airplane and has had a great run, not many left flying in the world.

If ou are giving them to A&P schools, i bet Tarrant County College would love it. They are the fort worth Texas area.

are the engines still on?

Depends. FedEx sold/gave one to the A&P school at my old airport. In its case, it had two engines that were timed out (and when FedEx times out an engine, it means that every single component in it is at its life limit). The third one still had 1,000 hours on it or so, so they took it and gave them a timed out engine from another 727. I figure the school has probably hot started and destroyed all 3 engines by now.

:lol::lol:

Ever seen an Allision 250 shoot 6' flames? That thing sure was hard to start with that faulty fuel control

That I haven't, but they came pretty close to that when they hot started both engines on the Commander 690 they had.

Have you seen turbine blades fall out the back side of a CJ610? They hot started the Sabreliner bad enough that's what happened. :hairraise:

I guess you haven't been to Africa lately.

I have a friend fly 72's in Africa. Not the type of endeavor I would pursue given the maintenance practices and lack of everything else.

Still, considering they were the mainstay of the short to midrange airliners for years the numbers have dwindled.

The Southern University A&P skool at DTN has N727FE that flew in 3 years ago...
They took the right engine off and put it on a stand in the hanger, the other two are still in run-able condition.

The FedEx pilot that I know delivered one. They flew it in and left with the CVR, FDR and the nameplate.

Kool......... That will save me the freight on having it delivered to Wyoming...

Letter to Fed Ex....

Dear Mr Fred Smith, I would love to have a runout 727... Please fly it to 2WY3 and I will even transport the crew back to KJAC for their commute home.......

A man can dream, can't he :dunno::dunno:;)

It's not the one at RAL is it? Looks to me like the engines are still attached.

Local Uni is going to give a 141+A&P program a go, with the 727 as a "lab", whatever that means. So far it's been a billboard and it's a neat objet d'art under the tower.. but not a whole lot else. I figure since they actually flew it over that it must have a plethora of valuable parts on it.

They might let you have it if you gave them a reason, but landing at a 3,000ish ft runway at 8,000 MSL might be a challenge. :eek:
