Yesterday, I was flying a return trip to North Carolina after visiting family in Florida. Winds were, shall we say, interesting. I was flying from PMP home to TTA with a planned fuel stop at LHW. The winds aloft ended up being stronger than forecast, resulting in a decision to divert to CRG. The second leg was even more interesting. In addition to the winds, most of the portion between abeam SAV and FLO was in the clouds with light to moderate rain showers and light to moderate turbulence.
The winds aloft were just weird. Consistently very strong form the west, with a fairly consistent 35 KT crosswind component at 5,000'. head/tailwind components ranged from 20 KT headwind to 5 tailwind. Despite that, except for that SAV-FLO portion, the ride was surprisingly smooth, even in a DA40.
And yes, it was great fun! (Picture is approximate - directs where there was airway routing).
