Is it a good prep for the FAA exam? Does the workbook include solutions/explanations? Working on some pre-flight training theory and knowledge.

(In hindsight, I suppose I could have just added this to the FAA prep question below, but too late now...)

Don’t know about a workbook, maybe that’s what it’s called now, but I’m a big fan of the the Rod Machado’s Private Pilot Handbook. Not because it’s the best or anything. It just clicks with some students. I used to teach at a busy flight school years ago. We used Jeppesen, Gleim, and Cessna material. The problem with those is they can be a little dry for some. Machado is excellent at thoroughly explaining basic private pilot information while keeping it fun. I’ve used a number of his techniques as a instructor to help keep students interested. So to answer your question, I would say yes it great prep but maybe not the most efficient method. Yes, he is very good at solutions and explanations. That’s really what he does. If flying is what you want to do you can’t go wrong with this resource on your shelf.

His workbook is a different book, it's a question and answer book.

Seconded. I think it was one of the first books I read when I was getting ready to start flight training years ago.

Just to clarify - I've ordered the handbook based on reviews. Just wondering if the workbook is a good idea.

The workbook is a companion to the handbook. It asks questions about the material covered in the handbook. I found the workbook helped me concentrate on what I read in the handbook, or alerted me when my concentration slipped without my even realizing it.

...and when you need to find the explanation for the answer, every question in the workbook is keyed with Chapter/Page/Column/Paragraph that takes you directly to the explanation.
