I'm torn between going to Avidyne and the GNX 375..

Waiting to hear from someone who has flown the 375 or made the decision.. ;)

There’s a big difference between those options. Which Avidyne are you considering?

IFD440 - completely understand the differences...

I just think both units are great pieces that can be used to complete or enhance a center stack.

Can't wait for Airventure to be able to touch/play and discuss... o_O

Would love to hear about in the field reports before that though.

Depends if you want a Nav/Com/GPS or GPS/ADS-B transponder. Very different units. A plus for the IFD-440 is a larger screen to display ADS-B content and geo related comm frequency selection.

I went the ADS-B transponder with a GTX-345 and displaying data on a GNS-430W. I'll upgrade the 430W to a GTN-650 or IFD-440 in the future. The 430W performed flawlessly and waiting unit the "next big thing" is introduced in GPS NAV/Com.

We have a 375 install scheduled for November [earliest date the shop had available]. It will replace a 335 that we will need to find a home for.

Tried talking Garmin into it, 3 authorized Garmin dealers, and looked into what it would take to become an authorized dealer. They seem to be locking them up tight, at least for now.

    175, over the counter.
375, no such luck. Garmin rules.

Make friends with a dealer, there will probably be some dealer holdbacks or rebates down the road.

They risk losing their Garmin relationship if they do. Also, they will want to mark it up considerably. There's really no upside for them to violate their Garmin agreement and pass on making installation fees.

;)You can buy on Aircraft Spruce for installation into an experimental aircraft. According to their FAQs, it is still the full certified unit. I’m thinking of getting one for that Lancair I dream of building.;)

I met an old WW2 vet (hangar neighbor) who tried to give me his Lancair, claiming nobody would buy it. I’m betting he’d let me use his T/N. Didn’t give me the plane because I’m 6’2” and wouldn’t fit!:p

My concern with that approach is getting support from Garmin down the road.

That’s the risk... they can’t decline support if you bought the plane second hand with it already installed..

I ordered mine 3 weeks ago through a Garmin dealer and still have no idea when it’s arriving.

I’m going with a G5 HSI, GNX 375, 255a Nav/Comm, and Aera 660 with AirGizmo. I also have the GDL51 for XM and backup AHRS.

I wanted the IFD 540 but the installer is a Garmin dealer and didn’t like me buying the IFD elsewhere.

Can you play xm radio (or more like control) using the gdl51 and ForeFlight? It used to be garmin Pilot only.. Also, has anyone heard about any updates regarding the GNX375 and ForeFlight compatibility??

No XM radio on the GDL 51 through FF, only Garmin Pilot.

The GNX 375 is supposed to talk to FF through Connext, it’s Bluetooth connection. Same as GDL51.

8 week backlog on the 375. Longer than the G3x.

So can Garmin Pilot connect to the GNX 375 and the GDL 51 at the same time? I want to ditch my old Garmin 496 (really just use it for XM radio but pay for weather too). The weather and radio on the GDL51 is 1/3 the cost per month..

Also it says you can use a Flight Stream 510 with the GNX375 (510 is compatible with Foreflight). I am guessing this is just to update the databases though?

Does anyone know what the "audio alerts" are that are spoken from the 375? Terrain, Obstacle, traffic, and 500'??

I'll take a stab at that!

I have a GTX345 hooked to a GTN650, the GNX375 should be pretty similar for the functions they share, I get traffic alerts with general direction, "traffic 2 o'clock" etc.
You will not get audio terrain warnings unless its an option, and installed (its a lot more $$$$$$) The standard it comes with is called terrain awareness which is all visual warnings. I think if you setup a timer in the GTN it will chime when it expires. None of the messages (arriving at waypoint, loss of GPS signal etc, Class __ airspace ahead), I've seen trigger any audio warnings.

The GTN "clicks" when I press keys on the tough screen, which can be turned off.

I think that's really about it. I've had this setup for about three years now.

The altitude callouts you see on jet videos comes from an Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS/EGPWS) not the GTN/GNX.

My 496 does the 500 callout :) I’m familiar with radio altimeters.. I was hoping the 375 would do terrain.

It comes with terrain awareness. TAWS enablement costs around $5k to $15k depending on what version you need.
