Here's another positive story about grass-roots aviation, this time at the Nut Tree Airport in CA.:

I have fond memories of that airport in the late 1960s, when it had a tourist-trap restaurant and tacky gift shop. My father was stationed at nearby Travis AFB then, and we often visited the Nut Tree on weekends. For my 10 or 11th birthday, I got a ride in a Ford Trimotor there (the crew had to make three attempts to get us airborne, but I didn't care).

Hey, watch what you say about the Nut Tree. :D In the 1950s that's where we went to see Santa Claus every year (growing up in Davis). We'd ride the train out to the the airport and back and have lunch with my mom's parents (they'd drive up from Mill Valley). I, too, have fond memories of that place.

Thanks for sharing this airport and your memories of it.
