Here's another positive story about grass-roots aviation, this time at the Nut Tree Airport in CA.:

I have fond memories of that airport in the late 1960s, when it had a tourist-trap restaurant and tacky gift shop. My father was stationed at nearby Travis AFB then, and we often visited the Nut Tree on weekends. For my 10 or 11th birthday, I got a ride in a Ford Trimotor there (the crew had to make three attempts to get us airborne, but I didn't care).
