How hot can you get a engine case before you would warp it.

Lets say That I'd like to powder coat a case at 400 degrees after it was lapped and line bored.

would it warp / distort / be unusable ?

I don't have your answer, but you may call Lycoming Technical Services and ask them. I have had good luck talking to them and they were more than happy to answer questions I had.

Why not contact Victor Aviation. They've been doing it for a few years and even state in their descriptions of going to 400. But don't know if that is before or after the machine work.

From what I know about high strength aluminum alloy castings (a mech engr but not a metallurgist), I wouldn't do it. The resulting product may suffer grain growth and be more prone to brittle fracture/cracking.
