There was an airshow near me this weekend. Oregon International Airshow - McMinnville, OR.

I tried to find some radio frequencies so I could listen in. Like the airboss frequency.

Couldn't find them.

Anybody know where these frequencies are published?

They did not use CTAF.

They are not published. Sadly, well meaning folks have pressed transmit while listening.

Easiest option is to just scan to find them.

Yeah, I know. But last year I was able to easily find them, including the Blue Angels air to air.

This year we had different performers.

I thought it would be in a NOTAM.
The airshow frequencies aren’t in the NOTAM because those frequencies are for the performers only. They get them at the daily briefing. Show frequencies can change from year based on what the FCC can allocate. The military performers have their own frequency plan, but also use the Air Boss frequency. The Blue Angels and Thunderbirds don’t, because the Air Boss turns the airspace over to them.

Fly-in guests use the normal frequencies unless it’s NOTAMed otherwise.

I've done photos during airshows, so I've been in the briefings. The first thing they tell you is not to share that frequency with anyone.

Beyond someone having a stuck transmitter, is there any other reason t NOT share the frequency information?

Tim (just curious)

It's only my guess, but there's some fools that think it is a good idea to make trouble by sending false instructions as if they were the air boss, or making other trouble. I can't find it in the internet, but I thought some joker imitated ATC for KJFK some years ago?

Thanks guys.

Airshow is done now. Next year I'll set up to scan to find them.

Because YOU are responsible and not a complete moron, and I am responsible and not a complete moron. and MOST people are responsible and not complete morons, but there's almost always that one person who may decide it's a fun idea to transmit on frequency, or stream it, or whatever.

Were you trying to listen from the COM in your plane or were you using a scanner? Almost any scanner can search the entire airband in a matter of a few seconds and find any active frequencies.

NASCAR teams are starting to run into this problem more often. One of the best things for a spectator at a NASCAR event is the ability to listen in on team communications. Well, cheaply obtained chinese handheld radios have made it possible for drunk Uncle Rosscoe to tell his favorite driver how much he loves him during caution. Or worse, cuss out their least favorite driver during a critical moment of the race. NASCAR is considering making the radio frequencies private and/or encrypted as a result.

People - as a general rule - are ignorant, self-serving jerks.

Yes, but there are a lot of well-intentioned idiots out there.

I tend to listen to the officials rather than the teams anyhow. It's more informative. Of course, I subseqeuntly spent a decade as a NASCAR official, so they gave me a radio I was allowed to talk on during the race.
