After nine years...

How do you identify the FAF without DME (or GPS)? My question is why are there non-DME Minimums?

I sent an inquiry. We'll see what they say.

Your Aeronautical Inquiry has been received by the FAA.

Airport: 2G1
State: OH
Procedure Name: VOR OR GPS-A
Inquiry: DME is required for VOR approach. Why is there a line of non DME minimums. GPS is an authorized substitute for DME. Why would the minimums be higher if doing the GPS approach? It seems to make no sense.

@RussR ? Is there any logic to this? A reason that if doing the GPS Approach the higher Minimums are needed, but if doing the VOR Approach and using GPS to identify the DME Fixes, they wouldn't be? Is the lateral airspace to be protected 'wider' or something like that?

When I earned my instrument rating at this airport in the 1970s the FAF was Chardon VOR. They must have invented TOMTA as an intersection off LNN VOR for some reason and when that VOR went away they must have a good reason for not making Chardon the FAF again. Or not. :dunno:

Makes no sense to me. If you're not using GPS, then yes you do need to have DME because it's the only way to identify the FAF. And if you have to have DME, then there is no need for the first line of minimums. That's the fix, remove that first line. I'm glad you sent in the question, let us know when they respond.

No, there is no difference in the criteria for an overlay ("or GPS") approach like this one. You would fly to the lower minimums if you were using GPS too.
