As I was wading through Gleim last night, I came upon a topic not familiar to me. They discussed the procedures for approaching a control towered field in Class G airspace. Where is there a towered airport in Class G airspace? I do not know any around Chicago.

Oh, by the way, the Helicopter Paloosa will be a pancake breakfast at KLOT on June 21.

A lot have gone D in recent years such as Lake City, FL. Army still holds out with a few. KSLJ, KSXS. There’s a few stage fields around Cairns, AL that have towers but aren’t indicated on the sectional.

I fly out of KSXS. But good luck talking to tower and ground. The frequencies are above the range GA VHF radios reach. And yeah, the stage fields are shown as non-towered on sectionals, despite being towered. I've landed at Lake City (KLCQ) twice. Both times towered, but once class G and more recently D.

Mine @ KJYO.

It's been a temporary tower, then a remote tower, now a temporary tower again. Also under the KIAD 1500 ft shelf and inside the DC SFRA (with a special rules cut-out). Including a NOTAM for procedures to approach.

Also 5 flight schools and a lot of KIAD reliever jets.

We got everything. Pretty good controllers (no radar) here that helps.

In addition to temporary towers, you also have new towers built in class G that eventually turn to D. Tower is completed and then it takes some time to change the airspace to D, leaving a short time it’s a tower in G. Couple in last few years in my neck of the woods. KJKA, Gulf Shores, AL. KAUO, Auburn, AL.

When the FAA crammed the yet another slavish half-assed ICAO compliance that the alphabet airspace was on us they PROMISED to do away with unmarked airspace and that towers would never show up in uncontrolled airspace again. Prior to the alphabet airspace, AIRPORT TRAFFIC AREAS (defined as within 5 SM of an operating control tower up to 3000 feet AGL) were NOT controlled airspace (though they frequently coincided with CONTROL ZONES which were surface area controlled airspace. Of course, this lasted about six months before the FAA realized that you can turn on a control tower just by putting controllers there, but establishing new controlled airspace requires a rulemaking procedure.

So, they quickly went back and retrofitted in 91.126 and 127 to make talking to control towers in class E and G obligatory.

So now we are back to stealth airspace which isn't charted, and a busted NOTAM system that means pilots would never hear about it reliably.

Then there are towers that went out of business years back leaving a military base to become a county civilian airport and now likely to be abandoned as it is on reservation. Lots of hangers , nice runways but on Blackfoot Reservation.Nice small museum, sleeping quarters for transit pilots. A UPS air freight drop off point for local UPS distribution center. Nice facilities there but…. It’s on the reservation. The county has it road department shop there.
Talk is of moving shop to non reservation land and abandoning airport. Used to be full time US Customs and Immigration office there . Now non staffed and serviced from US border station at Sweet Grass with minimum one hour notice required before landing or wait in aircraft till Customs/Immigration arrives. The two ports of entry close by are grass strips and require minimum of 30 minutes advanced call time.
Ross international at Sweet Grass 7S8 . 2900 X 80 Turf. Unicom 122.8
Whetstone International at Del Bonita , Canada. Runway is grass and on Canadian side of border.
The other place to land and clear is in Calgary , Alberta but for most heading in to
lower western Canada it is a long jog out of the way.
