Winters bring lots of unflyable weather to the PNW. Low clouds, lots of icing, and nasty winds. Today the ceiling isn't too bad, but the winds are gusting to 41 knots just around the corner from my home 'drome, and gusting 23 almost full crosswind at my home base. That's keeping my plane in the hangar today! What's keeping you grounded?

Last week, south central Alaska saw winds 70G90 for 2-1/2 days. It’s blowing again now.

Maintenance. I’m 7 hours past my oil change and also my motor died when pulled back to idle during run-up. Probably a carb issue. My mechanic is coming out to take a look at her next week and get us sorted out.

Great flying today and tomorrow (tues). But on Wed, we'll be getting Flyhound's weather. Just got an email from the airport (5 nm from Denver Intl) to be prepared, just in case Xcel energy decides to kill power to the airport (KCFO) due to winds. Tower and office will be on generator, but no way to open/close the hangar doors.

We've been seeing winds 90+ in the mountains over the weekend.

Check the idle mixture.

Here's a photo of my home drome a few days ago ...
Blue arrow is my hangar. Note the planes dragged from their hangars clustered around the long white hangars in the center. Management hauled them all to higher ground. My plane is in there somewhere.

Update: A nearby town recorded 60-knot sustained winds and at least one gust of 80 knots last night. They say it snowed but I can't find any on the ground. I'll go check if the hangar is still there in a bit. Definitely a good day to stay hangared!

Yep, we've been getting some not great flying weather up here lately. I'd like to get our little Colt up this weekend but the forecast isn't great, maybe Christmas will work for us.

Quite a few blow offs here the other day.
Set a record for the state for blow offs of high cube trucks on the same day.
Unusual to have such high winds across the mountain states all at same time.

Around these parts, it would be the overcast / cloudy days keeping you from burgers and pattern practice. It's actually the icing conditions and weather up north around Louisville and Chicago that keep us from going up there as often.

The 2 W's today. Work and weather... and the fact I'm getting sick is probably going to screw up the weekend plans

I got my carburetor replaced on Tuesday after having been unable to start it for weeks (accelerator pump was shot) and I still haven't actually flown it because of the winds on Wednesday and today, and I didn't want to fly at night after that repair when I had the option yesterday (probably for the best, it was still blustery). Looks like the weekend should be nice though so I'll finally be able to verify that everything is running properly.

I flew this past weds night, 2 days ago. It was warm, calm and clear. Great winter late afternoon weather for a super smooth flight, epic actually. Love how my plane performs in the winter air.
Yesterday it was windy and rainy, today it was more windy and frozen. 2 days in a row I didn't go to the hangar.
Tomorrow will be better, there's always tomorrow in most cases.

Too much wind (mountains saw 90 mph earlier this week) but clear & sunny

Temp this afternoon was 72 F
In Denver, Colorado.
On December 19.

Definitely aint gonna be a white christmas in town.

Winter Park has 18 in base, only 50% snow of what it usually has at this time.
Vail's got 28 in base, but only 8 of 33 lifts open.
Telluride's in bad shape too.
