727 crash

Just about killed a bunch of guys on motorcycles! That was crazy close.

Yikes! Wonder if it's another improperly loaded freighter, similar to that National Air 747 accident.

Flaps not set for takeoff, overloaded, wrong V speeds set? So they got airborne and then crashed?

Check out the videos - it's pretty crazy. It looks like they crashed while trying to circle back to the field.

I did look at them, must have been some damage that caused them to lose control. Surprised they got airborne at all after going 4-wheeling.

Yeah, almost like they stalled it in that tight turn while dumping fuel. I was wondering why they were trying to circle so low. Is that airport surrounded by mountains?

Looks like the landing gear missed a few of those guys by inches. Kind of went in between them.

It's cool to see planes taking off but standing in the flight path may not be the smartest idea, even if this kind of thing rarely happens.

Yeah, this is the vid that shows them just prior to impact. Looks like fuel streaming from both wings. It appears on the takeoff vids that fuel was steaming back as well.

So......here is another video of the same carrier taking off from that airport.....

Things that make you go....hmmmmm.

Better view. Did he even hit anything? I didn't notice that they did. Overloaded or wrong flap setting maybe. If overloaded maybe stalled it in? :dunno:

35' DER. Suuurrrreeee.

Seriously though, hopefully there was a serious malfunction that led to this mishap and not just plain crew negligence. But first glance looks like another indication towards the less than safety conscious South American aviation culture.

Looks like he was too heavy, rotated after the overrun and stalled. I suppose the load could have shifted but if that was the case, I'd expect more of a pitching moment.

I agree, the video which shows the accident, definitely looks like he stalled in the turn. Didn't look like he was much more than 500ft while doing the fuel dump, although it was taken from a distance. Taking off overweight looks to be a high probability.

Looking at some of the takeoff data online, sure looks like 5,900 ft isn't going to cut it unless the aircraft is flying extremely light.

Well, now that's what a normal takeoff looks like.

Exactly. No room whatsoever for any error.

Some folks on another board are claiming there is evidence of fire on NR2 on takeoff in the accident video, but I haven't looked close enough to see it.

If you look at the video taken that shows the left side of the aircraft, there is a flash of fire coming from the NR2 engine tailpipe right after the aircraft crosses the dirt road.

Yep, a flash at 30 sec. Could be something ingested after snagging that fence.

The guys on the street are saying the plane lost a wheel in the video. I bet an engine was damaged as well.

The government will fix the safety problem by arresting a couple of people who have nothing to do with the accident.

The guys taking the video made some comments that he lost a tire on the fence and they could visually see the airplane dumping fuel.

I couldn't see that in one of the video but another does look like he hit the fence. Interesting crash. I wonder if the plane was equipped w/ voice and data recorders? Not sure what the rules are in that country.

It looks like people expected a show and had the cameras ready.

Perhaps this sort of media could support ALPA's case against Flag of Convenience exemptions? (a la "Blood on the Highway")?

Air travel is bus travel. It's now a commodity, available to the masses. It ceased being a luxury available only to the comparatively wealthy "jet setters" (remember them?) not long after Boeing introduced the 747 jumbo jet. And like most commodities the real cost has continued an almost relentless decline since. Hell, one of the world's two largest builders of commercial airliners even calls itself "Airbus". ;)

It still takes great skill to operate one of these beasts (Air France 447 should be ample evidence of that), but quite a different array of skills in many ways compared to the days of yore.

As one of "the masses" I'm glad that air travel is easily available to us. I don't mind it being bus-like. I don't need luxury.

This is one of the hallmarks of the American economy. It is able to bring a bigger range of goods and services at lower costs (as a percent of disposable income) to a broader portion of its citizens than anywhere else. Europe, Latin & South America, Australia, even the much vaunted Asians can't compare.

Look what American technical and commercial innovation did to the price of oil, gasoline and the now discredited theory of Peak Oil in the past few years. :D Just one example.
