The fly in is just a tad over a month away. As discussed at last year's fly in, there will not be an organized lunch like it has been in the past. We discussed bringing the grill over and doing more of a picnic style cookout. Bring your own, go to the bar, bring stuff to share, whatever. For those who have gone to Rough River, it will be more like that. I plan on sharing whatever we decide to do/bring, with those who fly in just for the day. I know a couple of the other pilots plan on doing the same. The rest of the weekend will go on as it has the past few years with The Station, Hoppys, breakfast, (with Kringle) etc. I believe the sign up sheet is up and running and someone will chime in with how to do that.
Looking forward to seeing our "6Y9 family." This will be our 21st fly in for those who are counting.

We are planning to be there in the RV45, schedule permitting! Fairly optimistic it will work out, but will know more in the coming weeks as it gets closer.

What date is this happening? I will be flying my son out to UND and will be in you neck of the woods

Labor Day weekend! Friday-Sunday are the main events, some people come in a day early/stay a day later.

Just for kicks, because I saw something I didn't remember seeing in my performance charts before - A little table with a "speed at 50 feet" - I went back to look at my last couple of takeoffs from 6Y9, which might have looked as scary on the ground as they felt in the cockpit - I should have taken some video, and had someone on the ground take video.

It was just me and, based on poor photographic evidence and some estimation, probably 34 gallons of fuel. I was probably at roughly 2800 pounds.

It looks like the takeoff speed and speed at 50 feet both roughly obey the weight-square-root law of V-speeds. Math combined with interpolation tells me that I should have been lifting off at around 60 knots, at 50 feet at 75 knots, and Vx would be 78 knots and Vy 96 knots.

On one takeoff, I lifted off at 62, hit 50 AGL at 82 about a second before crossing the departure end of the runway, and was 79 KIAS and 77' AGL at the tree line. It was also definitely bouncy, airspeed was bouncing around about ±3 knots. Temp was 18ºC (ISA+5). On the next takeoff (16ºC/ISA+3), I lifted off at 64, hit 50 AGL at 87 again about a second before the end of the runway, and was at 90 KIAS and 68 AGL at the tree line.

So, maybe not as bad as I thought, but definitely not something I'd do with pax, more weight, or higher temps!

Another fun thought was getting VGs, upgrading to the 310hp engine and new composite prop, and swapping my Concorde batteries out for EarthX. 10% more power and 61 pounds less. That'd probably do it... But a new plane might be cheaper. :(

Find someone to loan you a 182 for the weekend! We were biking past the departure end when you were taking off and it seemed scary to us.

All 5 of us will be there in the RV45, but I haven’t signed up on the website yet.

The low flying RV is enroute. Currently in Indian River, MI, heading to Big Bay, MI tomorrow for 5 nights, then on to Sidnaw. Looking forward too seeing some old friends.

Sorry, I can't be there. Working.

At least I'll be flying an airplane to wooded northern parts... It's just gonna be hundreds of miles away from 6Y9. :(

Hope to see you Friday, Tim (and your bride, too)!

Ted, I know Diz and Brad feel the same, you guys are like extended family to us and we are so looking forward to seeing you again this year.

Likewise, Tim. We're looking forward to seeing you all.

I plan on being there this year! There's some thunderstorms on the guess-o-meter in the Madison area on Friday, but hoping the forecast changes as we get closer. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Wx looking grim tomorrow; we’ll be flying the Volvo. It has lower minimums.

Sorry - gave it my old college try and then work took over. This will be my first time missing in a while and I'm 0-4 this year for fly-ins. :(

Although yesterday was LIFR, today is clearing up nicely. Still a few clouds to the east but blue skies overhead, and improving.

The RV45 can fly and land in 0/0 (among other reasons because if it actually takes off that’s a definite emergency) so the low ceilings yesterday weren’t an issue for us getting in.

Made it to Wausau WI yesterday but it was really too low IFR to make 6Y9. Dodged the T Storm line; Am in the office this morning with a bunch of "back to school" candidates.....sigh. Land of Lakes was below mins, so we went home.

It was so hot in metro chi that at the pumps , while idling for the fuel farm (2 flight school birds parked there) the Rt. propellor went into full feather. Had to Tug it back in the hanger and restart it last night to get it back into normal config.....sigh. Miss you guys.

The RV45 made it home from 6Y9 trouble free just a bit ago. It was a smaller crowd than normal with the low ceilings on Friday, but the weather overall over the weekend couldn't have been better.

A huge thanks to Diz, Brad, and Ed (but mostly Diz ;) ) for making this event happen for 21 years now, and Grant and Leslie (mostly Leslie!) for making Sunday breakfast.

6Y9 is beautiful, a real gem of a location. Every year I love showing up and getting the view out the windshield of the bus down the runway. Here's this year's edition:

We always leave wishing we could spend some more time there. Hopefully the stars all align for us to return next year.
