6 + gunman killed, 3 injured at Sikh Temple

We're getting just plain old mean, and the problem is growing. This is what happens when we sit by and let evil reign in our land because it makes us comfortable and allows us to be lazy.

Henning has a point. Note recent threads here. Civility is dying. Literally.

I heard one of the Officers got ambushed and trapped in a one-on-one shoot out. Hope he recovers.

Really shows the dangers (to the Officers) of the "don't stage outside, go in" changes in overall tactics training for mass shootings since Columbine.

The recent thread about traffic stops and Officer silliness notwithstanding, I'm glad there are folks who'll wall right into the stupidity at great risk to themselves to assist the unarmed. Not a fun job.

Ugh. Everyone likes to make fun of the local PD until something like this happens. Ugh.

I work at the trauma center where the victims were brought. It is the overall best hospital in the state and the largest academic center as well. Unfortunately, we have a lot of penetrating and blunt trauma experience, and I'm sure the victims are getting the best care possible. Three gun shot victims at one time is not a rare occurrence, and the hospital has more than enough capacity to handle many more than three major simultaneous trauma victims.

They sent out an alert for a mass casualty event to the staff, but fortunately we didn't need to mobilize and go in to assist. The police arriving on scene quickly probably saved a lot of lives.

The officer was shot in the parking lot, and is expected to recover, according to news reports. Sad event.

I have noticed a great restraint and discipline in officials not speculating or over-reacting. Despite wanting to know everything immediately, I applaud them for acting with deliberation.

Dumbass rednecks mistake them for moslems?

I recall hearing our boys refer to the Iraqis as Hadjis. Hadji was a character from Johnny Quest, an Indian who dressed like a Sikh.

True, but the term is beginning to loose some of the negative feelings that it started out with.

Example, friend of mine returned with a love for the "hadgi-mart" in Iraq.

Perhaps not accurate but when has that stopped anyone:lol:

I lived in that city and have worked with a few of their officers before, and know a few of the tac guys who went in the temple to clear it. They are a good department. Good job on the response. News is saying that the shooter was a white supremacist and was kicked out of the Army.

Any further word on the wounded officer?

The officer came through surgery ok. He is still in critical condition, is expected to recover, but no word if it will be a full recovery or not. He got hit 8-9 times, and once in the neck. It's going to be a long road ahead of him. The shooter actually lives 3 blocks from a friends house. Now the news is saying they are looking for a 2nd "person of interest".

Damn, if you get the chance pass along my best wishes, things like this are one of my biggest fears

Agree, many things today are just plain evil and we're afraid to say that. This was an evil act just like CO, Fort Hood, etc.

Well, there were the Ghurkas<sp?>, they were pretty badassed

Gurkhas are Nepalese - actually an ethnic group as opposed to a religion. I think most are Hindu but I've met only one or two. Had it been a temple full of Gurkhas the perp would have instantly been ripped to pieces.

Sikhs are less militant then the average Christian, frankly. I've many friends who wear turbans (and there are "non-observant" sikhs as well).

Very possible, or just a general anti-ethnic attitude taken to an extreme. The perp is dead (there may be an accomplice), so it may take some time to figure out.

What the hell did Sikhs ever do to anyone!

Actually, Indira Gandhi was killed by two Sikhs. She had recently sent troops into the state of Punjab (many Sikhs live there) to quell some separatist elements. It seems this (both the invasion and the shooting) was political though - not directly related to their religion. Every group has its nutcases, unfortunately.

Of course she did send the troops in what is known as The Golden Temple.....the holiest templein Sikhdom....imagine the uproar if it had been the Vatican or if Christian troops invaded the main mosque in Mecca...etc.

It's interesting the difference in attention and expressed sentiments between this incident and the one in CO the other day. I guess a bunch of heathens just don't rate...

Well they can't blame a violent movie, the perp is apparently an extremist so no "shock value" there, and the victims "weren't from around here".

How are you gonna get the average american's glands pumping and sell some toasters/cars/whatever with this kind of story?

For those who are deaf to sarcasm... My sympathies go out to the victims and the others terrorized during their worship. I'm glad the shooter is dead, and I'm proud of the police response - hope the injured cop recovers fully.

I'm glad the scum-sucking media isn't making a ton of money off this sorrow.

I was referring to here.

That's 'cause the "scum-sucking media" is pre-occupied with the Olympics and the political bashing between the candidates. :wink2:

And this is why more law abiding people should be able to easily carry, it's not as attractive to go all psyco when chances are the folks you are going to be shooting at might just shoot back.

Nope, crazy people would not be deterred in the slightest, probably looking for a shoot out like in the movies...

I don't want to compare one to the other but a key difference for me is the CO incident was a wacko that was random in his violence. This latest one was a wacko whose violence was motivated by pure hatred. And as if to illustrate what a senseless deplorable hate driven crime this was, he picked on a group of people that (total guess here) are very far removed from what he thought he was targeting. Anyway, I'm glad he's dead and I wish the best for the injured.

Hey, how about that...made it all the way to post #30 before....

Was he wearing body armor, Josh?

It wouldn't be the first time that has happened.

Born in Punjab, India, Sodhi was a member of the Sikh religion. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, where he worked as a taxicab driver. He later relocated to San Francisco, where he continued to work in that capacity. He saved enough money to buy a gas station in Phoenix and moved there.
On September 15, 2001, Frank Roque shot Sodhi five times, killing him instantly. Roque, who apparently wanted revenge for September 11, mistook him for an Arab because of the clothes he wore, his turban, and his beard. Within 25 minutes of his death, the Phoenix police reported four further attacks on people who either were Middle Easterners or who dressed with clothes thought to be worn by Middle Easterners. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Balbir_Singh_Sodhi

Had to have been. If the guy adsorbed as many rounds as the press reports say, the shooter was either a very good shot trying not to kill the LEO (which is super dubious), or the hit to the neck was just a tragic hit in the fusillade.

I've done many a knife and gun club emergency in the middle of the night(s).....

oh Jay_us.
